E-rides are everywhere right now, so it helps to know what is legal and what is not.
In Georgia, an electric bicycle has pedals, stays at or below 20 mph on motor power, and runs on a motor of 750 watts or less. If it meets those standards, your rider can use bike lanes and follow the same rules as any bicycle. A helmet is strongly encouraged.
An electric motorcycle is different. If it has no pedals, exceeds 20 mph, or is built like a dirt bike, it is NOT a bicycle under state law. These bikes require registration, insurance, a license plate, a valid driver’s license, and full street-legal equipment. They cannot be ridden on sidewalks, neighborhood roads, parking lots, parks, or trails.
We are seeing many high-powered electric motorcycles that do not meet legal requirements. These bikes can reach 30 to 50 mph, putting riders, pedestrians, and nearby drivers at real risk.
If your family is considering an e-ride, check the specs first. Safe choices prevent serious injuries and keep our community moving responsibly.

Great news, Alpharetta! The greenway trail south of Marconi is now open! However, please be cautious—some sections are still a bit muddy. Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors!
