An SMB, or surface marker buoy, helps make you more visible at the surface and can be a huge help if you surface away from the boat or dive group.

Whether you’re diving from a boat, doing a drift dive, or planning a trip with current, an SMB is one of those pieces of gear every diver should know how to use.

A few quick reminders:

✅ Carry an SMB on every dive
✅ Practice deploying it before you need it
✅ Keep it accessible, not buried in your gear bag
✅ Make sure your reel or spool is ready to go
✅ Ask for help if you’ve never practiced using one

Why Nitrox? 🌬️🫧💨

You’ve probably heard divers talk about “diving Nitrox,” but what does that actually mean?

Nitrox, also called Enriched Air, is a breathing gas with a higher percentage of oxygen and a lower percentage of nitrogen than regular air. For many recreational divers, that can mean more enjoyable dive planning and more time where it matters most — underwater.

Benefits of Nitrox can include:

✅ More no-decompression time on certain dives
✅ Shorter surface intervals in some dive profiles
✅ Great for repetitive dive days
✅ Helpful for dive trips with multiple dives per day
✅ A smart next step after Open Water certification
✅ Better understanding of dive planning and gas management

Nitrox does not mean you can dive deeper — it actually requires proper training, planning, and oxygen limit awareness.

Myth: You have to be an expert swimmer to learn how to scuba dive.

Truth: You do need to be comfortable in the water, but you do not have to be a competitive swimmer. Scuba is about control, breathing, buoyancy, and learning the right skills step by step.

🚨 Safety Saturday: How Much Air Should You Surface With?

One of the biggest misconceptions among new divers is that a dive ends when the tank is nearly empty.

In reality, good divers plan to finish with a reserve.

Your reserve gas helps account for unexpected situations, assists with safe ascents and safety stops, and provides a buffer if conditions change during the dive.

The exact amount depends on the dive, conditions, your breathing rate, and your training, but one thing remains the same:

💨 Never plan to use all your air.

A well-planned dive includes a well-planned reserve.
