When designing a program, especially the GPP phase of a program, sometimes its key to throw in movements that the athlete isn’t exposed to as much with their sport, but can really add resilience and balance to their body and training. Basketball players, getting outside and running a little bit longer sprint than the usual 90ft.

A great video that illustrates the mindset of athletes and some clients you may come across. Communication and learning them as a client/athlete are huge. Do you need to push or pull back on your clients?

Sometimes a demonstration or doing the exercise or workout is all you need to do. You get immediate buy in, show the technique, focus, and intent you want the movement or still performed. So sometimes just shut-up and do.

A friendly reminder to not to forget the “C” in S&C.

Do you know what it takes to get to single digit body fat? Do you know what it takes to play D3 ball? Many state their goals to me without really knowing the effort needed to get even half to that goal. I’m not trying to detour you from your goal, but make sure you are willing to do what it takes before stating that goal.

The first thing as a trainer/strength coach you usually notice in a client is that around that 3 week mark they come walking through the doors with their head higher, a new wardrobe that shows off their physique more, and a change in personality of being more confident. This usually then translate into their life. Whether is on the field or court or at their place of work and family life.

Majority of my training schedule is with the general pop. These are clients who haven’t sprinted or jumped in decades. If they go to move fast they pull something. Their body and brain fight them every step of the way. But they need to do something to counteract the body losing this muscle mass. I know they will never move like and they don’t need to move like Von Miller , but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t add something “fast twitch” back into their program. The longevity benefits of jumping and sprinting are well documented.

The first movement introduce is a med ball slam. Get a light med ball (zero bounce), bring over head, lead with your hips and core and slam it into the ground and 50% power compacity. As you adapt, you build up your intensity. After about 3 sessions I then introduce the same exact movement pattern, but opposite resistance…the kettlebell swing.

Rhythm, power, controlling momentum. These are two great exercises to keep your gen pop client safe and to get them moving like an athlete again!

You have to remember when you see pro workouts on social media they literally do this for a living. They have all day for trendy modalities and still have plenty of time for the basics. Trainers like me who work with general pop and youth athletes on see them for 1-3 hours a week. So I can’t afford to “miss” on an exercise or training modality. What I do with them has to be proven to work and work well.

Consistency, smart power movements to match experience and where the athlete is at in their season prep, and multiplanar movements.
