As a professional with a masters degree and decades of experience, I never imagined playing in the dirt would help me pay my bills.

When I lost my job unexpectedly I had to get really creative to maintain my income. I was watching the climate and seeing women my age, my income bracket, with my experience suddenly struggling and I just decided to do things differently. I decided to lean into my joy.

Everyone knows that I love gardening and I love traveling so instead of doing less of what I loved I did more!

• I planned a workcation in Mexico and invited professionals to work abroad with me.

• I made weekly harvest baskets for my neighbors who wanted fresh, organic produce, but didn’t have the time or desire to grow their own.

• I learned to make soap and sold and bartered herbal soap.

• I grew big beautiful luffa sponges and sold them at a nearby pet store. Turns out rabbits love them and people spend good money on their pets.

• And I coached! I poured myself into my skills. I priced based on my value and my knowledge not based on my desperation to pay a bill. I never sold. I only offered.

I didn’t respond to losing my job by shrinking my life. I expanded the ways I allowed my gifts to support it.

This week I invite you to lean into your gifts and hobbies. We all need a bit more play and joy in our lives. What’s a hobby you enjoy that you could monetize if you needed to?
