Buck and Luanne Wicall founded West Valley Horse Center in 1972, and we've kept our doors open on a heritage of love for our local community & their animals. Today, Buck & Luanne's daughter Adrienne and the entire WVHC team still offers the same expert advice, warm care, and friendly service that have kept our customers coming back again and again for over 50 years -- and we're always happy to greet a new face (or muzzle!).

How much hay does your horse actually need?

Most horses need roughly 1.5–2% of their body weight in forage per day. For a 1,000lb horse, you're kooking at 15–20lbs of hay, split across multiple feedings if possible (horses are built to graze steadily, not eat two big meals!)

Workload, metabolism, and access to pasture all shift that number. If you're not sure where your horse falls, bring us their weight (or a good guess) and we'll help you do the math -- and find the very best forage for them.

Your horse's digestion, teeth, and joints all shift with age, which means they require softer, more easily chewed forage (think soaked cubes or pellets) or senior-formulated feed with added fat for calories.
