Late June is the peak of firefly season in Pennsylvania. It is a time when backyards, fields, and forests begin to glow with soft, blinking lights just after sunset. Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are just beetles that use bioluminescence to attract mates. Pennsylvania’s humid summer evenings create perfect conditions for their displays, especially in areas with tall grasses, trees, and clean air. In fact, the state is home to over 15 species of fireflies, and conservationists have noted that firefly activity is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Watching them dance across the yard or a quiet park is a simple but magical part of the season. Just turning off porch lights and avoiding pesticides can help keep these tiny lights shining for summers to come.

All other fishing regulations must be followed on this day. Visit the fish and boat website for more information.

Around June in Pennsylvania, raspberries begin to ripen on brambly bushes along trails, forest edges, and even backyard fences. These wild berries are small and deep red, and are a favorite among local birds, deer, and hikers lucky enough to spot them. Eastern PA's mix of sun and rain creates perfect growing conditions for native raspberry species like Rubus occidentalis, also known as black raspberries. While they may seem like just a sweet snack, they also play a very important ecological role by supporting pollinators and wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled to see if you can see any black raspberries growing in the park.
