French Word of the Month – July: La patience
This month’s French word is la patience (patience), which comes from the verb patienter—meaning to wait patiently.
Patience is more than just waiting; it’s staying calm and positive while you wait.
In Uganda, we practice patience almost every day. If you’ve ever taken a taxi from the Old Taxi Park in Kampala, you know exactly what this means! Before the journey begins, passengers often have to wait for the taxi to fill up. It may take a few minutes—or a little longer—but it’s a reminder that some things simply can’t be rushed.
In French, you can say:
1. Je patiente. – I am waiting patiently.
2. Merci pour votre patience. – Thank you for your patience.
3. La patience est une vertu. – Patience is a virtue.
