Meet the Dial Dynamos: Essien Thomas
Age: 16
Class: Form four
Playing number: 5
At 16 years old, Essien Thomas is already in his third Premiership Division with the Arima North Secondary football team—having made his debut while still a U-14 player in 2023.
Essien is at home in central defence or at left back and combines physical strength with an impressive passing range and appreciable leadership qualities.
His father, Warren Phillips, and uncle, Kerron Phillips, are both former Dial Dynamos while his uncle also represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 2001 Fifa U-17 World Cup. With his work ethic, humility and dependable left foot, Essien has the tools to surpass them one day.
Here is some more about Essien Thomas:
I live in Maloney Gardens.
My favourite subject in school is maths, because I like to solve puzzles.
Something interesting about me is I get along with children very well—whether it is my sisters, or nephews and nieces, or children on the whole.
To play for this Arima team, you need a mixture of technical ability, discipline, quick and vital decision making, consistency, willingness to listen to the coach and the ability to play under pressure.
I think the more we train together, we become a well-oiled machine—able to face obstacles, small and great.
My strengths as a player are my passing, leadership qualities, determination and my ability to work with my team and help our cohesiveness.
Arima football fans can look forward to me playing to the best of my ability throughout the season, and in every match.
My future targets are to become a professional footballer, to be one of the best school footballers, to make an international team, and to be a role model for people to look up to.
Editor’s Note: Come out to support Essien Thomas and the Dial Dynamos from 3.40pm on Wednesday 23 September as we take on Premiership leaders Speyside Secondary at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar!
