la technique c'est la base

⚽ “You build a player like you build a house. The basis of the player is technique.” — Arsène Wenger

A football player is not built by starting with tactics, formations, or the weekend result. A player is built from the foundation up.
And that foundation is technique.
For young players, the ability to control the ball, pass accurately, dribble, carry the ball, finish, and use both feet provides the tools they will later need to solve the problems the game presents.
You can teach a child where the space is. You can explain when to pass. You can show them the best tactical solution. But if they don't have the technical ability to execute what they see, their understanding has no tools to express itself.

🧱 Build the foundation before the upper floors

In youth football, we are sometimes tempted to accelerate the process. We talk about formations, pressing, build-up play, positioning, and tactical principles while some children are still struggling to control the ball under pressure.

Development needs progression.

Technique → Perception → Decision → Ex*****on.

But this doesn't mean technique should only be developed through isolated drills and repetitions without context. Children also need to practise technique in situations where they must observe, choose, and make decisions.

A first touch has value because it prepares the next action.
A pass has value because it can eliminate an opponent or create space.
A dribble has value because it can solve a 1v1 situation.

So, technique is the foundation, but the game gives it meaning.

A great youth coach isn't simply building a team capable of winning on Sunday. They are building players who should still be capable of playing and understanding football 5, 10, or even 15 years from now.
