The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), organized the Consultation Workshop on Collaborative Study of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) Impacts on Fisheries Resources on 10 July 2026 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand.

This consultation workshop was organized with the aimed to define roles and responsibilities among collaborative research team and establish agreements on data collection, sharing, and collaborative analysis. This consultation workshop was conducted under the project entitled “Enhanced Marine Research Capacities to Manage Fisheries Resources: Capacity building on marine environment change monitor and assessing their impact on fishery resources” with fund supported by the Japanese Trust Fund (JTF).

A total of 15 participants (6 women and 9 men) attended as the collaborative research team, representing from Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), Indonesia; Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia; DOF Thailand; Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC); Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU); Burapha University (BUU) Chanthaburi Campus; Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University (RBRU); the Regional Fisheries Policy Network (RFPN) and staff from SEAFDEC Secretariat, MFRDMD, and TD.

During the consultation workshop, the collaborative research team brainstormed and discussed the details of the data analysis methodology and data requirements, research activities timeline, confirmation on selected target species and sites, roles and responsibilities, data availability and data sharing process. In conclusion, the collaborative research team came up with the agreed workplan for the research activities implementation.

Did you know that women make up nearly half of the global workforce in small-scale fisheries, keeping coastal economies afloat and feeding millions? 🌍🐟 While men often venture out to sea, women are the driving force inshore, managing local catches, processing fisheries products, repairing nets, and leading market trade in Southeast Asia. Despite their substantial roles in the value chain, traditional stereotypes often keep their contributions "invisible" when it comes to leadership, training, and fisheries management plans.

To change the tide, SEAFDEC, in partnership with the FAO, conducted a comprehensive gender analysis across Lao PDR, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand. 🇱🇦🇲🇲🇵🇭🇹🇭 Using "Access and Control Profiles," we looked beyond who uses the resources to find out who gets to make the big decisions. 📊🧐

The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD), organized the Subregional Training Course on Data Analysis of Fisheries Resources and Biological Data in Relation to the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) from 6 to 9 July 2026 at SEAFDEC/TD, Samut Prakan, Thailand. This subregional training was conducted under the project “Enhanced Marine Research Capacities to Manage Fisheries Resources: Capacity building on marine environment change monitor and assessing their impact on fishery resources” which aims to enhance the capacity of SEAFDEC Member Countries’ researchers in understanding the impacts of marine environmental changes on fishery resources through conduct collaborative research and convening the training course.

Resource persons of the training were from Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU); Burapha University (BUU) Chanthaburi Campus; Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University (RBRU); Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) with A total of 21 participants (8 women and 13 men) attended, representing Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand, as well as the Regional Fisheries Policy Network (RFPN) and staff from SEAFDEC Secretariat, MFRDMD, and TD.

This training contributed to strengthen the capacity of SEAFDEC Member Countries in monitoring marine environmental changes and assessing their impacts on fisheries resources. Through lectures and practical sessions, participants will enhance their skills in data integration, statistical analysis, and the interpretation of climate–fisheries interactions, while also strengthening collaboration and networking among researchers in Southeast Asia.

The SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) is participating in Thailand’s national fishery exhibition, “Pramong Nomklao,” organized by the Department of Fisheries. The event took place from 3 to 12 July 2026, at Future Park Department Store in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand. SEAFDEC/TD is hosting an exhibition under the theme "Smart Gear, Save Sea" to raise public awareness about sustainable fishing technologies and marine ecosystem conservation.

This year's exhibit specifically highlights fishing tools designed to minimize negative impacts on marine mammals, showcasing practical solutions such as the use of circle hooks and acoustic deterrent devices or pinger. Furthermore, SEAFDEC/TD is addressing the critical issue of marine debris caused by Abandoned, Lost, or otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG). The exhibition educates visitors on vital preventative measures like the proper marking of fishing gear, alongside modern retrieval methods utilizing Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to locate and recover ALDFG from the ocean.
