A study examining 2,545 actions from 88 professional players found that scanning before receiving a pass was associated with a greater likelihood of successfully completing the next action.

Scanning does not guarantee the right decision—but it gives the player better information from which to make one.

So, during the next game, look beyond the final pass, shot or turnover.

Watch the two seconds before.

That is often where the next play truly begins.

🏒 WHAT YOU CAN SEE vs. WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE

When we watch hockey players, we naturally notice the obvious things:

Skating. Shooting. Passing. Stickhandling.

But some of the most important parts of a player are harder to see.

Do they scan before receiving the puck?
Do they recognize pressure?
Do they support their teammates?
What do they do without the puck?
How do they respond to mistakes?
Are they coachable?

A player can have a great shift without ever touching the puck — by being in the right position, communicating, creating space, supporting the play and taking away time and space.

That’s hockey too.

As coaches, we’re not just developing skills.

We’re developing players who can see the game, understand the game and influence the game.

Pay attention to what you can’t always see.
