Feedback and conflict can feel very different depending on culture—and Thai and European work styles sometimes collide without anyone intending to. In many Thai workplaces, harmony, saving face, and indirect communication are valued, so criticism may be softened, hinted at, or shared privately. Many Europeans are used to direct, fast feedback and open debate, which can be seen as efficient—but may feel harsh or embarrassing to Thai colleagues. On the other side, Thai indirectness can be misunderstood as “unclear” or “avoiding the issue,” even when it’s meant to be respectful. To collaborate smoothly, agree on a shared feedback method (1:1 vs group, written vs spoken) and set expectations about tone and timing. Use curiosity-first language (“Can we explore…?”), confirm understanding, and separate the person from the problem so everyone feels safe to speak up.

The sweet spot is keeping your own strengths—your natural warmth or your strong clarity—while adjusting tone, timing, and meeting etiquette to reduce friction.
