Your child practices their groundstrokes for hours

But have they ever practiced when their hands are shaking, and their heart is racing?

When the score is tight, the Chimp brain fires - and the Computer brain goes looking for a program to handle it. If all the training happened in calm conditions, it finds nothing there.

That’s not a talent problem it’s a software problem.

Part 3 of the 3 AM method series for parents is now live. Five drills that begin to fix it - and a clear explanation of why practice doesn’t always become performance.

Here’s something that changes everything for tennis parents.

Your child’s prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain responsible for impulse control, reasoning, and long-term thinking - is one of the last regions to fully develop.

It continues developing well into the mid 20s.

A 10-year-old who panics when serving for the match is not mentally weak. Their impulse control system is literally still being built.

This is not an excuse. It’s biology. And understanding it is the difference between a parent who adds pressure and a parent who builds resilience.

There are three characters living inside your child’s head. And only one of them is actually trying to play tennis

The Chimp-fast, emotional, reactive, treats a mistake like a survival threat

The Human-reason, values based, long-term. But quiet under pressure.

The Computer-stores every program your child has ever learned. Good and Bad.

Here’s the thing parents need to understand: your child cannot silence the chimp. No child can. No adult can. The chimp is always going to speak. The question is what happens after it speaks?

This week I’m writing a series for tennis parents that explains all of this in plain language-just what you actually need to know.

You’ve invested in coaching. The technique is there, the fitness is there, but something happens in matches that doesn’t happen in practice.

This week I’m writing specifically for tennis parents because the conversation about the mental game seldom includes the people who matter most to a junior player. If you’ve ever sat courtside watching your child fall apart in a tight match and thought ‘they can play better than this-what’s happening’, this week is for you.

For decades, the most important piece of the performance puzzle was left largely untouched what is happening inside the players mind?

The human brain , present at birth in its basic architecture-but slow to mature-and this matters enormously for coaches and parents.

A young player who panics under pressure is not broken or weak. Their chimp brain is simply doing what chimps do. What they may lack is a computer that has been deliberately programmed with the tools to respond differently-sound coaching.

I recently realised something that transformed how I coach. My students were performing well in matches—they had learned the individual pieces of technique, mental tools, and tactical concepts. But I saw an opportunity. What if they could perform even better? What if instead of carrying the weight of everything they’d learned, they operated from absolute clarity and simplicity about what to do in each moment?

So I began looking for ways to simplify their thinking. To give them fewer things to focus on, but make those things count.

Your Emotions Are Advisors, Not Masters: The Hidden Superpower Inside Every Tennis Match

Every player has emotions on the court. The question is whether those emotions are working for you - or against you.

Every player brings emotions onto the court. Anger. Frustration. Confidence. Fear. Excitement. Despair. These are not flaws to be eliminated. They are not signs of weakness or instability.

They are data.
