Dr Ousmane Sy, Alumnus, was among the presenters during the International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA2026) parallel oral abstract session titled “Integrated Approaches to Malaria Control: Epidemiology, Co-Infection, and Emerging Technologies,” moderated by Prof. Magatte Ndiaye, Monitoring and Evaluation Lead.

is participating in the International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA), taking place from 16–21 August in Montréal, Canada.The congress is organized by the World Federation of Parasitologists (WFP).

As the largest gathering in the field of parasitology, ICOPA brings together leading scientists, researchers, and practitioners to share knowledge, foster collaborations, and address global challenges in parasitic diseases.

As part of her PhD project, Soumba Keita is undertaking a four-week scientific immersion at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM. The placement aims to strengthen her technical and analytical expertise in malaria immunology through hands-on training in laboratory techniques, including Luminex assays and sample processing.

Soumba Keita : ''It also provides an opportunity to refine the immunological component of my research under the mentorship of leading experts. This experience will facilitate the implementation of the planned laboratory analyses upon my return to Mali and contribute to strengthening local capacity in malaria research.''

The second edition of the Socio-Cultural Days on Mosquitoes and Malaria was held from July 20 to July 28, 2026, by PhD fellow Pape Cheikh Sarr and his team across three rural villages in Senegal: Darou Salam (Richard-Toll Health District), Keur Martin (Fatick Health District), and Mbine Coly (Mbour Health District).

This year’s edition was held under the theme “The role of the community in the fight against malaria: the role of the family."

Pape Cheikh Sarr: ‘’Beyond field interventions, the core objective of our community engagement approach is to position communities as true partners in scientific research by integrating their local culture, traditions, and socio-cultural practices into health initiatives.

The fight against malaria can't be achieved through scientific research alone; sustainable elimination requires empowering families and recognizing communities as key partners in vector control and health promotion. By working together, integrating local traditions, and aligning our efforts with national strategies, we demonstrate that a malaria-free future is achievable when communities take ownership and lead the way.”

MARCAD Alumnus Dr Ousmane Sy participated in the DELTAS Africa Career Advancement Fellowship- Inception Meeting held from 21–24 July 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Dr Sy joined an elite cohort of scientists dedicated to advancing the sustainable socio-economic development of the continent. The meeting brought together fellows for focused training in leadership development and science communication.

Science for Africa Foundation: '' The DELTAS Africa Career Advancement Fellowship Programme is a one-year initiative supporting 13 senior postdoctoral fellows and early-career researchers from across DELTAS Africa consortia as they transition toward independent research leadership.

Through financial support, mentorship, and targeted capacity strengthening, the programme equips fellows to enhance their leadership capabilities, advance their research agendas, and build the skills needed to shape Africa’s scientific future.''

Ndey Fatou Drammeh, PhD fellow, is currently undertaking advanced training in CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing of Plasmodium falciparum in the Moon Lab at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) as part of her PhD work on Plasmodium falciparum experimental genetics.
