𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐢

On 19 August 2026, the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society Tonkolili Branch, together with its dedicated volunteers and staff, collaborated with the Manager of SLBC FM 94.1 in Magburaka to donate 10 units of blood to the Magburaka Government Hospital.

This life-saving initiative formed part of the 300 Days of Activism campaign, which seeks to help save the lives of women and children across Tonkolili District by supporting access to safe blood when it is needed most.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to every volunteer and blood donor who generously contributed to this important cause. Your selfless act of kindness is giving hope, saving lives, and making a meaningful difference in our community.

𝐒𝐋𝐑𝐂𝐒 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞

The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (𝗦𝗟𝗥𝗖𝗦) has strengthened its measles response in Kono District through two practical trainings for Red Cross volunteers, Community Health Workers and staff.

The first training, held on 27th and 28th July at the SLRCS Training Hall in Koidu Town, focused on Community-Based Surveillance and contact tracing. Through case studies, simulations and role plays, participants practiced how to identify and report suspected measles cases, contacts tracing, making timely referrals and applying Infection Prevention and Control (𝗜𝗣𝗖) measures.

The sessions were facilitated by Mr. Abdul K. Sesay, 𝗗𝗛𝗜𝗦𝟮 Data Manager from Ministry of Health headquarters, and Michael Yomba, 𝗥𝗖𝗖𝗘/Health Promotion Officer from the Kono District Health Management Team.

On the 31st July, Jonathan E. Pessima, 𝗥𝗖𝗖𝗘 Officer from the National Public Health Agency (𝗡𝗣𝗛𝗔) and Michael Yomba, 𝗥𝗖𝗖𝗘/Health Promotion Officer, facilitated the training on Risk Communication and Community Engagement, and the responsible use of social media platforms.

The training strengthened the ability of participants to listen to community concerns, address rumors and misinformation, and share clear, accurate and culturally appropriate health messages.

Supported by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (𝗜𝗙𝗥𝗖) through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗙), in collaboration with 𝗗𝗛𝗠𝗧 and other response partners, the trainings prepared frontline responders to recognize early warning signs (𝗘𝗪𝗦), connect families with appropriate health services and provide communities with information they can trust.

For communities that depend on the sea, farming, and local markets, knowing when bad weather is coming can make a big difference.

The 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 (𝗦𝗟𝗥𝗖𝗦) is working with communities across 𝟭𝟳 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮, 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝗸𝗼, 𝗣𝘂𝗷𝗲𝗵𝘂𝗻, 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮 to help people better prepare for disasters and the effects of climate change.

Through the 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗖𝗕𝗗𝗥𝗥) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, Community-Based Disaster Management Committees have been formed. These committees bring together people from within the communities, including 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀, 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀

Over the past months, committee members have taken part in practical trainings on 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲, 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀 (𝗩𝗦𝗟𝗔).

🌦️ 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫

One important part of the project is helping people understand weather information and know what to do before a disaster happens.

The SLRCS has partnered with the 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 (𝗦𝗟𝗠𝗲𝘁) and the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 (𝗡𝗗𝗠𝗔) to train community members on 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀.

This means a fisherman can have better information before going to sea. A farmer can make better decisions about planting and harvesting. Market women and youth groups can also receive timely weather alerts and take precautions when necessary.

Community members are also being taught how to understand weather information, receive alerts from SLMet, and use the 𝗦𝗟𝗥𝗖𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗗𝗠𝗔 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗹-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 to share important information and report emerging risks.

🥾 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞

The project is also supporting communities with 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 to help them clean and maintain their wharfs and surrounding areas.

For the Sierra Leone Red Cross, disaster preparedness is not only about responding when something happens.

The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS), with support from the IFRC through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF), has successfully concluded two key capacity-building trainings to strengthen its emergency response to communities affected by windstorms and fire disasters in Falaba, Karene, Kono, and the Western Area.

The trainings equipped staff and volunteers with practical skills in 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑨𝒊𝒅, 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 (𝑴𝑯𝑷𝑺𝑺), 𝑬𝒑𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍 (𝑬𝑷𝑰𝑪), 𝑷𝑺𝑬𝑨, 𝑷𝑮𝑰, 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 (𝑪𝑬𝑨), 𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑽𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 (𝑪𝑽𝑨) and cash distribution monitoring. Additionally, volunteers have been deployed to support community sensitization, promote accountability, monitor cash assistance, and ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered safely, transparently, and with dignity.

Through these efforts, SLRCS continues to strengthen community resilience and deliver timely, people-centered humanitarian assistance to those most in need.

The spirit of humanity was on full display as the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society's Tonkolili Branch commemorated 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝑩𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑫𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒓 𝑫𝒂𝒚 on 14 June 2026 with a life-saving blood donation drive at the Magburaka Government Hospital.

Red Cross volunteers and staff generously donated 16 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅, demonstrating their commitment to supporting patients in need across the district. Beyond the blood collected, what stood out most were the smiles on the faces of the donors—expressions of joy, compassion, and pride in knowing that their simple act of kindness could help save lives.

The enthusiasm and positive energy displayed throughout the event reflected the selfless spirit that defines the Red Cross Movement. Each smile told a story of hope, solidarity, and a willingness to stand with those facing medical emergencies.

This initiative not only helped strengthen the hospital's blood supply but also raised awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation and inspired others to become life-savers in their communities.

As we mark World Blood Donor Day, the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society encourages everyone who is eligible to donate blood and become a beacon of hope for those in need.

The exercise resulted in the collection of 18 units of blood, which have been transferred to the regional transfusion facility to support patients and save lives across the region.

The Branch leadership expressed heartfelt appreciation to all voluntary donors and supporters who contributed to the success of the activity. The initiative strongly reflected this year’s theme, “𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝑯𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚,” as Red Cross volunteers and health workers worked together to strengthen the dependable regional blood bank in Makeni.
