It's easy to evaluate when things are going well.

It becomes more difficult when the car is scrapped and expectations are in the ditch.

We had never been better prepared before the first Junior ERC round in Sweden.

Karl Peder and Sunniva had done a very good job beforehand.
The team around had also delivered very well.

The test was good.
The notes were good.
The atmosphere in the team was good.

Then we scrapped the car on shakedown.

It is quite fascinating how quickly several months of work can be turned into scrap heaps and rather heavy phone calls.

And believe me:

It gets very quiet in the service park when all the other cars leave to start the rally – while your own gets back on the truck bed of a tow truck.

It is also in such moments that you find out if evaluation actually matters.

Because it is quite easy to evaluate when things are going well.

It becomes significantly more difficult when:
- The car is scrap
- The budget takes a beating
- And the whole team feels the disappointment

Then it quickly becomes tempting to say:
"That's how it happens."
"Marginal error."
"Bad luck."

But if you stop there, you probably learn little and slower than your competitors.

One of the first things we said in the sports meeting after the rally was therefore:

"We can't just sweep this under the rug and say the error was marginal. The consequences were great. We must be able to learn something from this."

Ever since the start of EVEN Management, we have spent a lot of time developing sports meetings and evaluation systems around the team.

We do not believe that good systems make us flawless.

But we have experienced how quickly learning can disappear if it is not followed up over time.

A new race will be prepared.
The phone rings and the calendar fills up.

And suddenly the evaluation is just in a folder that no one opens again until you happen to find it while looking for something completely different.

We have therefore become more and more concerned with one thing:

Learning speed.

Not just learning.
But to learn faster than others.

If you make the same mistakes long enough, you usually lose out to those who learn faster.

That simple.
And so brutal.

But even with good systems, mistakes still happen.

At least we haven't found the magic "avoid all mistakes" button yet.
Feel free to let me know if anyone has it.

The goal is to:
- Reduce errors
- Detect them faster
- and increase the speed of learning over time

For us, good evaluations start with a few pretty simple things:
- Clear goals
- facts rather than feelings
- Honesty in the culture
- concrete measures

In order to get honest evaluations, I often say that honesty must be earned.

There must be security.
And there must be mutual respect.

The interesting thing is perhaps not who makes the fewest mistakes.

But which environments manage to:
- learn the fastest
- Adjust smartest
- and keep the learning alive over time

Because there will be more mistakes.

The only question is what to do afterwards.

How do you work with evaluation and follow-up over time?

Because in the end, it's really quite simple:

It is not your experience that determines how good you become.

That's what you learn from it.
