F-111 or ZP? Why would you choose one over the other?
Great question from our last post, so let’s go a little deeper.
Our pilot chutes are built with the same overall construction. The main variable is the fabric choice: F-111 or ZP.
So why does that matter?
🔹 ZP has a coating that reduces how much air passes through the fabric. For the same diameter, that generally means a ZP pilot chute will create more drag.
🔹 F-111 allows more air to pass through the fabric, so at the same diameter it will generally create less drag than ZP.
That means a 28" ZP and a 28" F-111 are not necessarily going to perform the same, even though the size is identical.
This is also why pilot chute selection is about more than just the handle or diameter. Material matters too.
A jumper might choose ZP when they want more drag from a given size, or when they want a smaller pilot chute to produce drag similar to a larger F-111.
A jumper might choose F-111 when that fabric better suits the rest of the setup and the deployment characteristics they want.
Neither one is automatically “better.”
It comes down to the complete system: material, diameter, canopy, deployment speed, discipline, and configuration.
For the newer jumper, this is a great reminder that the small details of your system matter.
