Do your joints bend further than everyone else’s? Let’s find out. 🤸♀️📏
Being “super flexible” isn’t always a superpower—sometimes, it’s hypermobility. If your connective tissue doesn’t limit your joint range the way it should, your training needs to look very different.
At ATHLETIC INC Singapore, our Physiotherapist and Performance Coach, Megan (Megan), uses the Beighton Score to screen athletes. Try these 5 movements right now and keep track of your score:
1️⃣ Pinky Finger: Can you bend it back beyond 90°? (1 point per side)
2️⃣ Thumb: Can you passively pull your thumb down to touch your forearm? (1 point per side)
3️⃣ Elbows: Do they hyperextend beyond 10°? (1 point per side)
4️⃣ Knees: Do they hyperextend backward when standing? (1 point per side)
5️⃣ Palms to Floor: Can you rest your palms flat on the floor with straight knees? (1 point)
The Verdict: This gives you a total out of 9. If you scored a 5 or higher, there is a very good chance you are hypermobile.
Drop your score in the comments below! 👇 And make sure you are following us—in Part 2, Megan will break down exactly how hypermobile athletes need to change their strength training to stay injury-free.

Part 2: The Dryland Framework 🏊♂️⚡
Fixing a swimmer’s stroke isn’t about random stretching. It requires a targeted progression to ensure dryland work actually translates directly to pool performance.
At ATHLETIC INC, our roadmap is simple:
• Central (Core & Spine): Establish stability.
• Proximal (Shoulders & Hips): Unlock movement.
• Distal (Limbs): Drive power.
Why it works: A poor streamline isn’t just a shoulder issue—it usually starts in a stiff thoracic spine. A weak kick often points to weak glutes, not just stiff ankles. You must build control before you load for speed.
The 10-Minute Daily Fix:
Consistency beats complexity. Run through this before you even look at the water:
• Breathing reset
• Thoracic & Hip mobility
• Posterior chain activation
• Ankle mobility
• Integration work
Mobility on land directly equals power in the water. Being pain-free isn’t the goal; being performance-ready is.

What does it actually take to support a young athlete from the sidelines? 🏟️🧠
Earlier this month, our Psychology Undergraduate, Mikal, led an insightful workshop together with our founder, Carl, on youth sports psychology that sparked incredible conversations on the floor. Parent Andrew and Coach Megan both highlighted the biggest takeaway: the absolute necessity of digging deeper into our athletes’ feedback and prioritising their psychological wellness.
Together, we explored the realities of early specialisation, the critical parent roles on the sidelines and the crucial difference between physical fatigue and true emotional burnout.
Moving forward, we hear your strong interest in learning how to spot the early signs of anxiety and approach these tough conversations at home.
Indeed, every child is unique, while there are many resources available online, trusted professionals including our coaches at ATHLETIC INC are always available to provide you and your child with a highly tailored approach.

🧠🏊🏼♂️ Last week, we stripped back the physical training to focus entirely on the mind. A huge thank you to everyone who stepped into ATHLETIC INC for our exclusive youth sports psychology workshop with Mikal and Carl.
The energy in the room was absolutely brilliant. From navigating the intense pressure of competitive sports to understanding the vital, everyday role of parents on the sidelines, it was an evening defined by constructive dialogue. We tackled the hard questions, shared real experiences, and translated the latest psychology research into practical tools you can use immediately.
To the parents who showed up ready to learn: your athletes are in great hands.
If you couldn’t secure a seat this time around, stay tuned. We will be sharing an exclusive post-event recap to get you up to speed very shortly!
Swimming makes you efficient in the water… but there is a physical cost on land. 🏊♂️
At a recent workshop with Team Singapore’s national swim coaches, our physiotherapist Dexter () highlighted a crucial truth: swimmer physical limitations are never random. They are patterns.
Rounded shoulders. Tight hips. Stiff ankles.
When your body lacks balance on land, it compensates in the water. And compensation always leads to inefficiency and injury.
The Coach’s Eye vs. The Physio’s Lens:
👀 The Coach sees: A broken streamline or a weak catch.
🔬 The Physio sees: Restricted thoracic mobility and underactive glutes.
Different language. Same exact problem. Mobility isn’t just flexibility, it is having absolute control through the range of motion your sport demands.
Are you compensating, or are you commanding your stroke?
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we break down the exact dryland framework to fix these imbalances.
