“I have osteoporosis. Isn’t lifting weights risky for my bones?”

It’s an understandable concern — but avoiding resistance exercise altogether may mean missing one of the most important ways to support bone health.

Bones respond to appropriate loading. Research has shown that resistance training can help maintain or improve bone mineral density, while also building the muscle strength, balance and physical function that are important for reducing fracture risk as we age.

But with osteoporosis, how you train matters.

It isn’t about lifting as heavy as possible or pushing through exercises that aren’t suitable for you. It’s about the right exercises, the right technique and progressive loading, based on your individual ability and condition.

At Fitness Factory, we believe osteoporosis shouldn’t mean being afraid of strength training. It means learning how to strength train safely, progressively and with purpose.

Strong muscles. Stronger bones. Greater confidence to keep moving.

Your muscles do much more than make you stronger. They also play an important role in how your body manages blood sugar.

After we eat, skeletal muscle is one of the major tissues responsible for taking up glucose from the bloodstream. And regular resistance training can improve the way our muscles use glucose and respond to insulin.

The evidence continues to support this. A 2025 review of 13 trials involving people with type 2 diabetes found that resistance training significantly reduced fasting blood glucose.

This is one reason strength training matters far beyond appearance or physical performance.

Building and maintaining muscle is an investment in metabolic health — and in how well your body functions as you age.

At Fitness Factory, this is what we mean when we talk about exercise as medicine: using the right exercise, appropriately prescribed, to support better health.

15 years with Fitness Factory — and still going strong.

Clarissa has always led an active life. From swimming and badminton to marathon running and biathlons, fitness has taken different forms at different stages of her life.

But through it all, one thing has remained consistent: showing up and continuing to work towards her own goals.

As Clarissa puts it:

“Everyone has their own different goals in fitness. But most importantly, it’s about taking that first step to start.”

Clarissa has been training with Fitness Factory since 2011. Over the past 15 years, her goals and training have evolved with her — a reminder that fitness doesn’t have to follow someone else’s blueprint. What matters is finding an approach that works for you, and staying consistent with it.

We’re grateful to have been part of Clarissa’s journey all these years, and even more grateful for her words:

“I would recommend Fitness Factory to anyone who wants to make a difference in their health and fitness.”

Whatever your starting point or goal, the first step is simply to begin.

“I have high blood pressure… will gym training be safe for me?”

We get this question a lot. And honestly, the research says the opposite.

A 2023 review looking at 92 different studies found that resistance training actually lowers blood pressure, not just cardio. Some studies saw a decline of up to 8 points in systolic blood pressure from strength training alone.

We’re NOT saying that you do not need your meds or that your morning walks is unnecessary. We are highlighting here that weight training should not be avoided just because you’re managing blood pressure.

Strength doesn’t stop for a diagnosis. Sometimes it starts because of one.

Hence the statement “High blood pressure means I should avoid lifting” turns out to be a myth. Book a free consult and let’s talk it through → link in bio

Grip strength can tell us more about our health than you might think. 💪

A major study involving nearly 140,000 people across 17 countries found that grip strength was a strong predictor of long-term health — even stronger than blood pressure for predicting risk of death.

But this isn’t really about having strong hands.

Grip strength is one simple way of assessing overall muscular strength. And as we get older, maintaining our strength becomes increasingly important for staying active, capable and independent.

That’s why strength training isn’t just about building muscle or changing how you look.

It’s an investment in how well you age.
Exercise is medicine — and building strength is an important part of it.

"Cardio for women, weights for men" — a script a lot of us grew up with, without ever really questioning it.

The truth is simpler than the old stereotypes: a woman's body builds strength exactly the way a man does. The "bulky" fear that keeps so many women away from the weights room isn't backed by how strength training actually works.

Joan Liew didn't wait for the gym to feel like it was built for her — she became Singapore's first IFBB Pro and made sure the next generation of women wouldn't have to fight for the same space. This is Joan's Journal — where we talk about strength, stereotypes, and the women rewriting the story.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active and keep your heart healthy. But as we get older, there’s another part of fitness we shouldn’t overlook: muscle and bone strength.

From your 50s onwards, losing muscle can start to make everyday things feel harder, like climbing the stairs, carrying groceries or getting up from a chair.

The good news? Strength and resistance training helps you maintain the muscle and strength you need for everyday life, while also supporting your bones.

And no, we’re not saying you should stop your daily walks! 🚶‍♂️

Think of strength training as something you add alongside your walks to keep your body strong and capable as you age.

We’ve explored why walking alone might not be enough after 50, and why strength training deserves a place in your routine.

Staying active after 40 is important. But as our bodies change with age, the way we approach exercise may need to change too.

Changes in muscle mass, joint flexibility, bone density and recovery can affect how our bodies respond to exercise. This is especially when training intensity increases too drastically.

In this carousel, we explore some of the common sports injuries that can occur after 40, including knee injuries, calf strains, shin splints and shoulder injuries, as well as practical ways to reduce your risk.

The goal isn't to stop doing the activities you enjoy. It's to build the strength, mobility and resilience to keep doing them safely.

Muscle atrophy, or the gradual loss of muscle mass, often happens quietly. You might only notice it when everyday movements start to feel harder.

Climbing the stairs, getting up from a chair, or carrying groceries can become more challenging over time.

The good news is, recognising the early signs gives you the opportunity to take action.

Swipe through to learn who is more at risk of muscle atrophy and what simple habits you can adopt to support muscle health as you age.

Healthy ageing starts with stronger muscles today.
