The word chowk in Hindi means a town square, a place where people gathered. In Odissi CHOWK is the basic posture of the dance. CHOWK- a Centre for dance, started in 2007 with a handful of students, classes were held all over the island wherever there were studios available. Earlier this year, Yong En closed out her Artist Residency Showcase 2025 with Devotions, a work drawn from Bach’s St John Passion.
It was a rare kind of piece, one where singing, percussion, and body movement weren’t only accompanying each other, but also genuinely listening to each other.

Some of our favourite mornings are the ones filled with small, determined feet. Junior Odissi at Chowk is where kids learn to move, listen, and create — one Saturday at a time.
Curious? Send your little one for a trial class, on us.

From Raghurajpur, Odisha, Mitu Das grew up in the tradition of his grandfather, Padmashree Maguni Das, and has spent his whole life in Odissi.
A Gotipua dancer from the age of five, he is now a Mardala player and teacher at Chowk.
We sat down with him to hear a little of his story.
This is what classes look like at Chowk
A room full of people learning something beautiful together — guided by Raka Maitra and Das Mitu, who teach with as much care as they perform. Every level welcome. Every attempt celebrated.

What if you moved like a monkey?
At the National Library’s Festival of Biodiversity, we joined author Deepa Ramanathan (Deepa Ramanathan) for an afternoon of storytelling, movement, and play — imagining the world through the eyes of our primate neighbours.
We talked about how animals move. We mimicked. We got a little silly. And somewhere in between, something real happened.
At Chowk, we believe the process is the point — whether you’re 6 or 60, a first-timer or a trained dancer, joy is always the teacher.
Thank you to every parent and child who came and played with us 🐒

A celebration of craft, dedication, and joy. ✨
The Studio Series with Veena was everything it was meant to be — an intimate, heartfelt Odissi performance shared with the people who matter most. Months in the making, and absolutely worth it.
See you at the next one 🙏
Learn Odissi. Make friends. Move differently.
Our adult classes are open to all levels — classical roots, contemporary approach, genuinely lovely teachers.

Every instrument carries a history. Every body that moves carries one too.
Last month, Chowk and Nadi Singapura shared the studio — six shows, two practices, one larger conversation. Nadi’s work asked us to sit with what goes into making an instrument. Chowk brought Migration of Form into that same space — how Odissi travels, shifts through bodies, and stays alive when we hold it together.
Grateful to .singapura for the memorable collab and for having us as part of Open City. To everyone who came through — thank you. 🙏
