It seems that my run-in with OCBC is never-ending especially handling my late husband’s matters.
An estate account had to be opened for the many legal and administrative matters. I chose OCBC more so for convenience since my son had a Mighty Savers account then.
In March this year, my co-Admin and I went to the ION branch to open an estate account. We were advised to open the account using my late husband’s NRIC. Well, would I know any better if we were advised correctly, given my new status as a widow??? All these took 3-hours to process. So I thought I would not have to deal with OCBC regarding my late hubby’s estate account. Was I wrong!
In April this year, OCBC had an FD promotion which I decided take up using the funds from the estate account. The transfer made online went without a hitch. 6 months later, maturity happened. The FD did an auto-renewal but it did not issue any email of acknowledgment. Neither did OCBC state that the interest rate would be changed. 17 days past the maturity date and I logged in via my laptop. I decided to cancel that renewal. Guess what, there are NO (zero, zilch) button to Cancel but there was a button to Place deposits! Really, OCBC ?
So I called in to query that logic. Know what the answer is? Oh, you can only make withdrawals via the mobile bank app. Wow, which device would be a “safer” hardwareto be misplaced, stolen or dropped? Ok, nevermind, I have its app and so he guided me with the withdrawal.
Guess what again? It was rejected! He said he needed to check for a reason. Minutes later, he returned with an answer. He asked if this estate account was opened while my husband was alive? Huh???? WT….???? Hello???? What’s the meaning of an estate account ????
He further said that because it was opened under my late hubby’s NRIC, that is the reason I am unable to withdraw. That I have to walk in to any branch to make the withdrawal.
Let’s see how you all assess this episode:
The bank officer ADVISED me that the estate account has to be under my hubby’s NRIC. I could place monies from this estate into an FD via online transfer without a hitch. But withdrawing funds out of FD before maturity can ONLY be done via mobile app. Such fund withdrawals cannot be done BECAUSE this estate account is under my late husband’s NRIC. I have been instructed to trot down to the branch to withdraw but I don’t need to trot down to the branch if I am giving monies to the bank.
Whose monies is this — mine or the bank’s? Why would you, OCBC, cause so much inconvenience to a widow? Why provide bad advice to a widow at its very onset??? Do you think widows are able to manage grief and children and inlaws above and beyond after her spouse is permanently gone? Do you think we know what and how to do in having an estate account? You, the bank, are supposed to be the professionals in your field? Why cause such inconvenience and such incompetency?
We are NOT the norm as the widowed. We only ask that logical and justified processes should be in place and not to give us standard cookie-cutter answers. It’s really frustrating to call in but problems are not heard nor solved.
