You remember your childhood playground. You probably can't say why.

It's because nobody told you how to use it. You showed up and invented something. Every day, different game, different rules.

That's really hard to design. Most playgrounds today don't even try.

Every time a kid decides to try something they're not sure about, and makes it, that stays with them. Small thing. Adds up.

That's what we're designing for.

In 2018, I left government. Walked away from approving contractor specs. I'd seen enough playgrounds built badly.

Started Parklab.

COVID hit two years in. Cleared savings. Maxed credit cards. Most people would shut down.
I couldn't. Because I'd already seen too much.

Every project we finish, some kid grows up with that as their playground. That's their version of what I had at the void deck.

That matters more than I expected it to.

Every other contractor said: "Site's too small."
We said: "It's a vertical canvas."

Tight footprint. Enclosed. Limited light. Standard equipment wouldn't fit. So we didn't use standard equipment.

The constraint didn't limit the play, it shaped it.

Challenging site? That's where we do our best work.

Not all playgrounds start the same.

This one starts with Pattan's Pumpkin, a 400-year-old Indian flood story about empathy, cooperation, problem-solving.

Every design element maps back to those values. The kids don't know any of this. They just think it's fun. But it's working.

Great playgrounds don't just entertain. They teach.
