Postcard from Romsdalen from our ambassador A L E X A N D E R N O R D V A L L and partner Samantha Karlsson . After living in Romsdalen for three years, it felt about time to finally visit “the dark side” of the valley – the north side, with the big walls of Trollveggen and Semletind. I´ts unmistakble to not look at these walls as a climber thinking you should got here - (although known for being loose and a bit so-so climbing wise)
Without giving away too much (some things are more fun to discover on your own), we went up the north face of Semletind, or “Søndre Trolltind”. The route has difficulties up to 6+ and somewhere around 16– pitches, depending on how you choose to break it up. It’s not as I´m into counting. A lot of good climbing on the route actually!
From the valley floor to the summit you gain about 1450 meters, but the approach steals a good chunk of that. The actual climbing is closer to 650 meters. Still, navigating this huge sea of rock with old hand‑drawn topos and your own intuition adds both charm and a bit of extra time. It’s definitely a full‑day mission, no matter what. .
The summer hasn’t exactly been generous with stable weather, so catching the small windows has been essential to be able to get some adventure, and adventure we got!
