Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) l (TTSH) is marking a decade since the launch of its Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) programme.
Through evidence-based care pathways before, during and after surgery, ERAS® aims to reduce complications, accelerate recovery and shorten hospital stays, so patients can return more quickly to their daily lives.
In this interview, TTSH’s ERAS lead Dr How Kwang Yeong shares how the programme has delivered sustained improvements in reduced hospital stays, readmissions, and patient outcomes.

Ten years ago, Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in Singapore launched its first ERAS® pathway in colorectal surgery. In year one alone: 29% shorter hospital stays and 58% fewer readmissions.
Since then, the hospital has opened a dedicated ERAS® ward, earned ERAS® Centre of Excellence status, and helped a growing cluster of hospitals get there too. This May, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Woodlands Hospital both reached ERAS® Society qualification.
As Dr. Kwang Yeong How, ERAS® lead at TTSH, puts it: "𝑰𝒏 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔, 𝑬𝑹𝑨𝑺® 𝒊𝒔 𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆-𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏." Behind that is standardised, evidence-based care, teams working together across specialties, tracking outcomes, and always learning from the data.
"Rather than a destination, ERAS® is an ongoing journey," he adds. "It is ultimately about building a learning healthcare system that continuously measures, adapts, and improves."
Encare's ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS) is one of the tools that helps make this kind of ongoing progress visible.
Congratulations to the teams at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and across NHG Health on ten years of results worth celebrating.

Ever wondered what it really takes to bring ERAS® pathways to life inside a hospital, not just on paper?
Join us on August 19 for a live conversation with the surgical and anaesthesia team at Gleneagles Hospital Johor, Malaysia. They will share their experience building ERAS® pathways for knee, colorectal, and gynaecology surgery, including how they made same-day discharge possible for selected patients.
Can't make it live? The recording will be sent to everyone who registers.

What changes for patients and teams when ERAS® moves from guideline to daily practice?
At Gleneagles Hospital Johor, Malaysia, a dedicated team built and now runs ERAS® pathways for knee, colorectal, and gynaecology surgery, including work toward same-day discharge for selected patients.
On August 19, join a live conversation with the team who lived it, together with Dr. Vera Lim, ERAS® Trainer from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Singapore.

Recovery from surgery doesn't start in the operating room. For many patients, it can start weeks earlier.
On September 11, clinical teams from Hospices Civils de Lyon (France) share how they built a prehabilitation program for patients preparing for digestive surgery, combining physiotherapy, nutrition, and hands-on support before the day of the operation.
Join the free webinar to hear how it works in practice, straight from the team that built it.

ERAS® protocols improve surgical outcomes. That much is well established.
The harder challenge is measuring compliance consistently across an entire hospital system, at scale.
Working with Mayo Clinic Platform Solutions Studio, Encare helped build a governed, scalable ERAS® data infrastructure across three Mayo Clinic medical centers and four surgical specialties, with a fully automated data pipeline from Epic into the ERAS® Interactive Audit System (EIAS).
Mayo Clinic Platform published a full case study on the collaboration: https://encare.net/news/building-enterprise-scale-eras-data-infrastructure/

We're proud to share that Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of Germany's most prestigious university hospitals, has achieved ERAS® Qualification in Gynecology at the Department of Gynecology with Center for Oncologic Surgery at Campus Virchow Klinikum (CVK). The protocol brings structured enhanced recovery, including prehabilitation ahead of surgery, to women undergoing complex gynecologic surgery, including ovarian cancer patients.
The team, led by Dr. Marlene Lee and Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Jalid Sehouli, focused on patient-centered outcomes — doubling first-day postoperative mobilization rates and cutting length of stay by four days, marking a meaningful improvement in perioperative care for patients.
This is what progress in women's health looks like.
