July 7 is finally here.

As of today, every new vehicle sold in the EU must have a system that monitors whether the driver is paying attention to the road.

It's a date the automotive industry — and Smart Eye — has been working toward for a long time. We asked some of our team what it means to them.

Tomorrow, July 7, becomes mandatory in every new vehicle sold in the EU.

But for most manufacturers, meeting the legal minimum is only part of the picture.

The General Safety Regulation ( ) sets the baseline. , the independent safety rating organization whose five-star ratings influence purchasing decisions across the market, goes further.

Where the GSR requires detection of prolonged visual distraction, Euro NCAP also rewards systems that catch short repeated glances, drowsiness, microsleep, and from this year, signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

Around 70% of vehicles sold in Europe carry a five-star Euro NCAP rating, which means for most manufacturers, the GSR floor is just the starting point.

Only four days to go until the mandate comes into full force.

But just having the right technology isn't enough: ADDW systems also have to prove they work before they can be sold in the EU.

To get type approval, systems must meet strict criteria, including:

• Issue a distraction warning within 3.5 seconds of the driver's gaze leaving the road at 50 km/h or above (6 seconds between 20–50 km/h)
• Perform consistently across varying lighting, weather, cabin layouts, and driver profiles
• Process all data locally in a closed loop, without retaining biometric identifiers

Six days until the system mandate kicks in. Let’s talk about what these systems actually do.

Advanced Driver Distraction Warning systems use in-cabin cameras to track head position and eye movements in real time.

When a driver's gaze has been off the road for too long, the system issues an alert — visual, auditory, or haptic — to bring their attention back.

Steering and lane-keeping data can tell you something has gone wrong, but not where the driver is actually looking – which is why the GSR's ADDW requirements can't be met without direct .

In just under one week, on July 7, the EU's mandate comes into full force.

From that date, every new vehicle sold on the European market — cars, trucks, and buses — must include a system that actively monitors whether the driver is paying attention to the road.

This is the final stage of a rollout under the EU's General Safety Regulation ( ), and the broadest yet: it applies to every new vehicle across all four-wheeled categories, an estimated 18 million per year. No ADDW system, no sale.

This week and next, we'll be counting down to July 7 with the key things to know about the mandate.

If someone is visibly intoxicated at a casino, staff are expected to intervene.

If the same person places a bet online, the platform typically has no way of knowing.

Yet the expectation is often the same: that operators should help prevent gambling-related harm.

With the expected to drive record betting volumes, that raises an interesting question. If physical venues can assess intoxication, should digital platforms eventually be able to do something similar?

Smart Eye and Sightic's behavioral impairment detection technology can identify severe impairment in real time using behavioral signals, making it possible to apply safeguards in digital environments that have traditionally only existed in physical ones.

This week, June 9-11, Smart Eye is in Detroit for 🚗

One theme connects many of the technologies we're demonstrating: helping vehicles better understand the condition and identity of the person behind the wheel.

From real-time alcohol impairment detection and remote vital signs monitoring to iris + face authentication, we're showcasing how in-cabin sensing is expanding beyond traditional applications.

On June 11, Smart Eye's Albin Ekström will also take the InCabin Exhibition Stage to discuss one of the industry's toughest challenges: developing impairment detection systems that work in the real world while navigating ethical and regulatory constraints.

If you're attending InCabin USA, stop by booth #105 to see the demos in person and meet the team.

What if a vehicle could monitor heart rate and estimated breathing rate without wearables, physical contact, or additional sensors? 🫀

That's what Smart Eye's new remote vital signs monitoring capability is designed to do, using the same camera-based hardware already deployed for Driver Monitoring Systems ( ).

By remotely tracking physiological signals in real time, the technology could eventually help vehicles detect warning signs of sudden illness earlier and support faster assistance when needed.

We'll be demonstrating the technology live at this week, June 9-11, at booth #105.
