Last night we hosted a celebration with the Irish Ambassador for Sweden, Barbara Jones, and two Irish delegates Rhiannon Meenan and Doreen Burke. This event was hosted by John Cunningham and our sponsors Collen to celebrate the growing Irish community in Gavle, the GAA in the Nordics region and the important role the GAA plays in the Irish community in Sweden. Barbara provided us with a fantastic and moving speech, mentioning William Butler Yeats and his amazing journey to winning his Nobel in literature and the book he wrote on this called ‘The Bounty of Sweden’ referencing the warm welcome he received from the Swedish people in 1923. Barbara also spoke about the promising future for the Irish people in the Gavle region. We took great pride in presenting her with the Gavle jersey.
