One of the challenges as a ”traditional” martial artist is in my experience how to avoid getting stuck in a rut. The rut of always doing things the same way, since that’s how they’ve always been done.
One of the issues with that is that even though the ”karate stiff” version might be a good way to start teaching how to apply techniques, it shouldn’t end there. No one’s going to stand in a Zenkutsu dachi and tell you which attack is coming, so why only train in that manner?
It’s important to remember that how a technique will be applied will depend on the circumstances, and they will always change, so even while doing ”basic bunkai” it’s important to practice them from different starting positions, if you want them to actually have a better chance of working.
[jundokan, Okinawa Goju Ryu, don’t limit yourself, explore different ways to reach the preferred outcome, bunkai is analysis not fixed forms, never stop learning]

Traditional karate with focus on self defence and personal growth. This translates to: the hard and soft style from Okinawa.
Well, technically last weeks menu, but it was a busy week so other things than posting on social media took priority.

Short snippet from this years uchi deshi week.
Taking something familiar and changing it up a bit.
Doing the kata mae, forward, instead of using the turns and stepping backwards.
No matter how long someone’s been practicing, changing a basic pattern still confuses you and forces you to think.
Think outside of your normal box, and also think while doing something you probably don’t have to think about normally.
[Okinawan Goju Ryu, Jundokan, uchi-deshi, never stop learning and experimenting, find new ways, kata Mae]
Nine weeks of summer break is over!
We’re back to our usual schedule in the dojo again, kicking it off with kobudo this Monday. And even though we have two sessions each week and we had a trip to Okinawa followed by an intense uchideshi week, it’s nice to get back to the normal routines.
The Kobudo menu has grown, but we’ll start the same for a few years now, adding yonegawa no kun, Kanegawa no nichigama and kugusuku no sai to practice as well, bringing the kobudo kata library to 21 katas to practice and teach.
Looking forward to a great fall semester 👊🥋
[brother and sister art, kobudo and karate are connected, cross training, shimbukan, ryukyu kobudo, never stop learning]

Good job
I’m really proud of you 👊🥋
[makiwara, Jundokan, Okinawa Gojuryu karate do, new gi for you, let’s build a new makiwara, the journey continues]

Started using this belt 2014 when we opened our dojo, the first picture is from 2016, the last one is taken this summer.
I wonder how much longer I will be able to use it before it either snaps or I’ll decide that it has served me long enough.
[jundokan, I’ll earn my new black belt when this is worn out, Okinawa Goju Ryu karate do, kuroobi]
