When you’re on holiday, it can be tempting to buy coral jewellery, ornaments, souvenirs or pieces displayed as ‘natural’ treasures. But behind that beautiful souvenir can be a living reef that took decades, or even centuries, to grow.
Coral reefs are vital homes for marine life and protect coastlines around the world. Taking coral from the sea, or supporting its trade, can contribute to the loss of these fragile ecosystems.
Did you know that many of the corals found for sale in Seychelles are actually imported from other parts of the world, and visitors looking to take them back to their home country require a special permit?
So next time you want a souvenir of your holiday, choose items that don’t come from the ocean.
MCSS is raising awareness of the vulnerability of Seychelles coral reefs through the Reefs@Risk Project supported by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Trade and Investment
