🎒 A new school year begins. So what does the schoolyard look like today?

The latest European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs gives us a snapshot.

113 882 teenagers aged 15–16 across 37 European countries took part, helping track how patterns of substance use among young people are changing.

Some of the findings stand out:

🟪 Cannabis remains the most commonly used illicit drug, but lifetime use is at its lowest level since 1995.
🟪74% of teenagers have tried alcohol, the lowest level ever recorded.
🟪Teen smoking has halved since 1995, while va**ng has surged.

Every overdose is one too many.

At least 7 600 people died from overdose in the EU in 2024. But these deaths could have been prevented.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those who have lost their lives, acknowledge the people affected by overdose, and reaffirm the importance of compassionate and evidence-based approaches to preventing drug-related deaths.

Drug-induced deaths remain a major public health challenge across Europe, but all are preventable through measures such as timely interventions, access to treatment, naloxone and broader health and social support.
