Nobody decides to put the phone away. It just stays in the bag. The hand reaches just to capture the moment — nothing more. Because there's a dolphin just off the bow, or the sun is doing something to the water that a screen couldn't possibly improve, or someone nearby says something that makes you laugh and you're actually there for it.

The mind takes a little longer. The first ten minutes it's still back at the desk, sorting through the list, replaying the email that needed a better answer. Then the swell picks up its slow rhythm, the salt settles on the skin, the shoreline gets smaller — and somewhere in there, without any effort, the list dissolves.

🇬🇧 There is a moment — somewhere off the Madeiran coast — when the water ahead begins to move differently.

Not waves. Something else. A shape cuts the surface. Then another. Then ten. Then thirty.

Common dolphins travel in groups that can stretch into the hundreds, and when they find a catamaran moving through open water, some of them decide to join it. They come fast — faster than you'd expect from an animal that size — and they fall in beside the bow, riding the pressure wave the hull creates as it moves forward.

This is not curiosity in the way we usually mean it. It is something more physical: a dolphin using hydrodynamics to travel at speed for almost no effort, the ocean equivalent of a cyclist drafting behind a truck. They do it precisely and with apparent ease, turning sideways sometimes to look up at the faces watching from the deck.

That is the moment guests tend to go quiet.

Here is the detail most people carry home: common dolphins have an hourglass pattern on their sides — yellow and grey — that shifts and flickers just below the surface as they move. In clear Atlantic water, on a bright day, it is one of the most unexpectedly beautiful things you will see at sea.

They are not always there. Wild animals move on their own terms, and we never know in advance what the ocean will offer. But on days when we're lucky enough to meet them, a bow-riding group of common dolphins is the kind of encounter that makes everything else feel very small and very far away.

Não são ondas. É outra coisa. Uma forma corta a superfície. Depois outra. Depois dez. Depois trinta.

Os golfinhos comuns viajam em grupos que podem chegar às centenas e, quando encontram um catamarã em movimento em mar aberto, alguns decidem juntar-se a ele. Chegam rápido — mais rápido do que se esperaria de um animal daquele tamanho — e colocam-se a acompanhar a proa, aproveitando a onda de pressão que o casco cria ao avançar.

Não é curiosidade no sentido habitual da palavra. É algo mais físico: um golfinho a usar a hidrodinâmica para se deslocar a alta velocidade com um esforço mínimo — o equivalente marítimo de um ciclista a aproveitar a sombra de um camião. Fazem-no com precisão e aparente facilidade, virando-se às vezes de lado para olhar para cima, para os rostos que os observam do convés.

É nesse momento que os passageiros tendem a f**ar em silêncio.

O detalhe que a maioria das pessoas leva para casa: os golfinhos comuns têm um padrão em forma de ampulheta nos flancos — amarelo e cinzento — que oscila e faísca logo abaixo da superfície enquanto nadam. Em águas atlânticas transparentes, num dia de sol, é uma das coisas mais inesperadamente belas que se pode ver no mar.

Nem sempre estão lá. Os animais selvagens movem-se segundo as suas próprias regras, e nunca sabemos com antecedência o que o oceano nos vai oferecer. The moment the catamaran clears the marina and the coastline starts to open up, something shifts. The island you spent a week exploring — by road, by cable car, on foot — rearranges itself into something completely different. The cliffs that looked decorative from the clifftop walk now rise straight out of the Atlantic, solid and vertical, with the ocean pressing against their base. The villages you drove through become tiny clusters of colour framed by green. The banana plantations that seemed like background scenery from the road reach right to the shoreline and stop, precisely where the island ends.

It's the same island. It just makes more sense from out here.
