🎾 YOUR RACQUET IS PART OF YOUR PERFORMANCE
Choosing a tennis racquet isn’t just about the brand or the design. The right equipment must match your level, technique, physical profile and playing style.
At Algarve Tennis Performance Academy, we pay particular attention to every detail of a player’s equipment.
RACQUET
• Weight and overall manoeuvrability
• Head size
• String pattern: 16×19, 16×20, 18×19, 18×20 — each offers a different balance of spin, control, power and precision
• Balance and weight distribution — an often overlooked factor that can significantly affect manoeuvrability, stability and swing mechanics
• For one-handed backhand players, choosing the right weight, balance and swing characteristics is especially important
STRINGS & TENSION
The racquet is only part of the equation. The type of string and its tension can completely change how a racquet feels and performs:
• Polyester, multifilament, synthetic gut or hybrid
• String gauge and characteristics
• Appropriate tension according to the player, racquet and playing style
A setup that is too stiff or a tension that is too high can reduce comfort and place additional stress on the arm.
ARM, WRIST OR SHOULDER PROBLEMS?
Equipment selection becomes particularly important for players experiencing wrist pain, shoulder discomfort or tennis elbow.
In these situations, it is essential to look at the complete setup: racquet weight, balance, stiffness, head size, string type and especially string tension.
A softer, more arm-friendly string setup and an appropriate tension can help reduce impact and vibration transmitted to the arm. Equipment should therefore be adapted to the individual player rather than following the same setup for everyone.
FOR JUNIOR PLAYERS
Equipment selection is equally important during development:
• Correct racquet length for the child’s age, height and ability
• Appropriate weight
• Correct grip size
• Suitable strings and tension
A racquet that is too long, too heavy, fitted with an oversized grip or an unsuitable string setup can negatively affect technique and make learning more difficult.
At Algarve Tennis Performance Academy, our approach goes beyond coaching technique. We help players analyse and optimise their equipment because the right racquet, the right strings and the right tension can make a major difference in performance, comfort and injury-risk management.

🎾 CHOOSING THE RIGHT RACQUET FOR A CHILD: A KEY PART OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT
A junior racquet should never be chosen simply because a child can swing it.
Over the past few months, while attending several junior tournaments across the Algarve, I have seen many young players competing with equipment that is simply not adapted to them: racquets that are too long or too heavy, grips that are too large, inappropriate strings, or tensions that are far too high.
These details may seem minor, but for a developing player, they can make a real difference.
A properly adapted racquet helps a child to:
• develop technically correct strokes
• accelerate the racquet naturally
• improve control and feel
• generate spin more easily
• learn the correct contact point
• reduce unnecessary stress on the wrist, elbow and shoulder
• and, above all, enjoy playing and progressing
Choosing a junior racquet should take several factors into account: height, age, physical development, playing level, technique and strength. And the racquet itself is only part of the equation.
Grip size, string type and string tension are equally important.
At Algarve Tennis Performance Academy, we believe that equipment must support the player’s development — not slow it down.
That is why we pay particular attention to junior equipment and regularly advise parents on racquet size, weight, grip, strings and tension, according to each child’s individual profile.
With the new Tecnifibre Junior Range, there are different options designed for each stage of a young player’s progression — from initiation through competition and performance.
🎾 The right racquet. The right setup. At the right stage of development.

🇺🇸 Welcome to the Algarve Tennis Performance Academy!
We’re delighted to welcome Nicholas Bohn, 15 years old, from Marietta, Georgia (USA) for his very first training experience in Portugal and the Algarve.
Already competing at a high level with a UTR of 9.2, Nicholas joined us for a high-performance training block focused on refining key technical details.
🎾 During his sessions, we worked on:
• Creating a more effective forehand contact point, striking the ball further in front of the body.
• Improving backhand extension through the ball to generate a cleaner, more penetrating shot.
• Refining his serve mechanics, with a particular focus on developing a stronger and more reliable kick serve on the second serve.
One of the performance indicators we use for a quality kick serve is simple: the second bounce should reach or even go beyond the back fence, demonstrating the right combination of spin, trajectory and racket head speed.
Working with motivated young players who are eager to improve every detail of their game is always a pleasure.
Welcome to the ATPA family, Nicholas! 💪🎾

🇬🇧 This summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming Freddie Healey from Sacramento State University (NCAA Division I, USA) to the Algarve Tennis Performance Academy.
With a UTR 11+, Freddie is a high-level player, but what impressed us just as much was his attitude: humble, hardworking, professional and always eager to improve.
Throughout his training block, our goal wasn’t simply to train—it was to optimise every detail of his performance and equipment.
Over the course of the program, we:
🎾 Tested different racquets to find the best match for his game.
🎾 Compared several string setups.
🎾 Fine-tuned different string tensions.
🎾 Worked on racquet customisation (weight, balance and swingweight).
🎾 Focused on finding the best overall setup to maximise his performance on court.
Working with players like Freddie is exactly what high-performance coaching is about: analysing every detail and constantly searching for those small gains that can make a real difference at the highest level.
A huge thank you, Freddie, for your trust, your professionalism and your outstanding attitude throughout your stay. We wish you every success for the upcoming NCAA Division I season and look forward to seeing you again in the Algarve!
On a personal note… training and playing with a NCAA Division I player like Freddie is a great reminder that I’m definitely not 20 anymore! 😅

🎾 Another first string broken… and that’s no coincidence. 💥
Congratulations to one of our regular players on breaking his first string during training! 👏
For many players, a broken string is more than just worn equipment. It often means that the quality of the ball strike, racket head speed and consistency are improving.
Breaking strings doesn’t make someone a great player on its own, but it is frequently a milestone that comes with better technique, greater racket acceleration and more committed hitting.
At Algarve Tennis Performance Academy, we don’t just hit balls. We build solid fundamentals that allow players to develop their full potential.
Keep working. Keep improving. The first broken string is just the beginning. 💪🎾
