The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel says a law‑abiding person carrying for self‑defense may lawfully bring a firearm into a post office open to the public and that the Postal Service’s blanket ban cannot be enforced against them in that circumstance.

The key is a long‑ignored exception already written into federal law. While 18 U.S.C. § 930 generally bans fi****ms in federal facilities, it exempts the lawful carrying of fi****ms “incident to hunting or other lawful purposes.” DOJ’s August 12 opinion concludes that self‑defense is clearly a lawful purpose, pointing to the Supreme Court’s recognition that self‑defense sits at the core of the Second Amendment.

This is an executive‑branch legal opinion, not a court ruling.

But it is a major shift: DOJ is saying the federal government cannot enforce either the statute or the Postal Service’s firearm rule against a lawful citizen carrying for self‑defense at a public post office.
