On February 6, 2023, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey.

In Kahramanmaraş, Mesut Hançer rushed to the collapsed building where his 15-year-old daughter, Irmak, had been staying with her grandmother.

Irmak was trapped beneath the concrete.

Mesut couldn’t save her—but he refused to leave her.

Through the freezing cold and rain, he sat beside the rubble, holding and gently caressing the fingers of his daughter that remained visible beneath the debris. 🥹🙏

The next day, AFP photographer Adem Altan came across Mesut sitting alone among the ruins. Mesut quietly called him over and asked him to photograph his daughter.

That photograph went on to become one of the most powerful images of the earthquake—and a heartbreaking symbol of a father’s unimaginable grief.

In 2024, the photograph received a World Press Photo award. 📸🏆
