A decade ago we started with a simple belief: every retired Thoroughbred deserves a second chance. Since then, we've welcomed hundreds of horses off the track and into new lives and we couldn't have done it without this community.

When we reached out to other freight companies for assistance, Trailer Bridge was the one that, without hesitation, said YES. That kind of generosity and commitment means more to us than words can express.

Last year, we had the honor of welcoming Mitch Luciano, CEO and Tony Kvasnicka, Vice President of Ocean Operations, to CTA. They took the time to visit our farm, meet our horses, and see firsthand the work we do. We welcomed them with open arms and we are so grateful for the relationship and support that has grown from that visit.

Should BREEDERS always take back their horse?

Thats something I see talked about-whether from desire or responsibility

I feel really mixed on this.

If a breeder sells a horse that then is passed owner to owner making money thru racing, competition, or some business use- then when the horse is used up- how is that now the breeders financial responsibility and not that of the person or people that wrecked that horse ?

I understand many breeders care DEEPLY about their horses. And I do understand there are a range from small breeders to huge producers.

Some breeders will take their horse back, incurring transport, medical and stabling costs. Some will retire that horse at their farm or find a suitable home or aftercare facility to help out sending some funds to help out

Some will completely ignore the situation

The third option I don’t think many people see is breeders do sometimes simply AGE OUT

I’ve contacted breeders to find out they have passed, are in assisted living, have sold the farm and the kids were not interested in the business. There’s literally no farm to go back to

They are contacted about a horse they had 20 years ago and now they are 80 undergoing heart surgery. Or have cancer. Or dementia.

So we might all judge and say there should be a plan in place. Maybe there should. But they are imperfect people just like we are. Lots of hopes and dreams and now longer the exciting life they had dreamed now has changed on a dime

So is it fair to put the burden of the system squarely on them? What role should everyone involved take on as the horses pass thru multiple racing or civilian homes?

She got into this state locally. Neglected and injured right here. Not at the track. That’s not unusual that people end up w these horses and don’t have the knowledge or resources to provide care

I knew the breeder, reached out, and we brought this mare back to their farm. She was in such bad shape yet they stepped right up immediately. This has not been my experience with all breeders but more than I would have expected. When we dropped her off we got to meet her actual horse mom and they were pastured together. It was a really cool moment
