Nescafé Tigers lift title at Shahid Hayat Memorial Polo Super League

LAHORE: Nescafé Tigers emerged title winners in the Shahid Hayat Memorial Polo Super League 2026 final, defeating EcoStar Knights 7½–5 in an exciting contest held at the Lahore Polo Club.

The tournament, organised in memory of former polo player Shahid Hayat, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd to the polo ground, reflecting the vibrant sporting spirit of Lahore.

Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel, brother of the late Shahid Hayat, attended the final as the chief guest. He was accompanied by the late player’s widow and daughters, Zainab and Zara Hayat. Also present were Lahore Polo Club President Malik Azam Hayat Noon, Executive Committee Member Feroze Gulzar, Club Secretary Major (R) Amjad Ghafoor, and a large number of polo enthusiasts and families.

In the final match, Nescafé Tigers dominated from the opening chukker, establishing an early lead against EcoStar Knights and maintaining their advantage throughout the game to secure a convincing win. For the Tigers, Raja Mikayial Sami delivered an outstanding performance, scoring three goals, while 10-year-old Azlan Azam impressed with two goals. Adnan Azam and Shiraz Qureshi contributed one goal each.

EcoStar Knights put up a strong fight, with Raja Jalal Arsalan scoring four goals and young Shafay Barry adding one. Earlier, in the subsidiary final, Lotto Carpets Kings defeated PB Wolves 6½–5 in a closely contested match.

At the closing ceremony, Raja Mikayial Sami was named player of the match, while Raja Jalal Arsalan received the top scorer award for the tournament. Azlan Jalil Azam was recognised as the best young player, and Akbar Azam along with Shafay Barry were honored as the emerging players of the league.

Lahore FG Polo secured a thrilling 7-6 victory over BN Polo through a sudden-death goal in extra time in the 63rd Allied Bank National Open Polo Championship for the Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup at the Lahore Polo Club on Wednesday.

The nail-biting clash kept spectators on the edge of their seats, culminating in a decisive goal in the sixth chukker during extra time. FG Polo’s Argentine star Raul Laplacette emerged as the standout performer, scoring six magnificent goals to lead his side to victory. He was ably supported by Ahmed Ali Tiwana, who contributed one crucial goal to complete FG Polo’s tally of seven.

On the opposing side, BN Polo delivered a spirited performance, with Tito Ruiz Guinazu putting up an impressive display by scoring five impressive goals. His teammate Lao Abelenda added one goal, but their efforts ultimately fell just short in the sudden-death finish.

On the opening day, Master Paints/Diamond Paints secured a hard-fought 12-9 victory over BN Polo in a thrilling contest that set the tone for the tournament. The match, played at a fast pace and marked by high-quality horsemanship and precision teamwork, kept the audience engaged throughout.

Master Paints/Diamond Paints established their dominance from the very first chukker, taking an early lead that they maintained until the fifth and final chukker. Their consistent attacking play and solid defensive coordination proved decisive against a determined BN Polo side.

Iranian professional Amirreza Behbudi delivered a standout performance, scoring six superb goals and demonstrating exceptional stickwork and tactical awareness. He was ably supported by Facundo Retamar, who netted five goals, while Sufi Muhammad Haroon Bin Haris contributed one goal to complete the tally.

For BN Polo, Lao Abelenda fought valiantly, scoring five goals. Titu Ruiz Guinazu added three goals to keep his side in contention, while Ibrahim Khalil chipped in with one goal. The event, organised by the Lahore Polo Club in collaboration with Allied Bank, saw a large turnout of spectators and families who gathered to witness the high-octane matches of this prestigious tournament. The proceedings were attended by the President of Lahore Polo Club, Malik Azam Hayat Noon, along with members of the Executive Committee and Secretary Maj (retd) Amjad Ghafoor.

Diamond Paints/Master Paints displayed superior tactical play and coordination, ultimately defeating Lahore Polo Club with a convincing scoreline of 10-4 ½. The standout performer for the winning side was Mir Huzaifa Ahmed, who delivered a masterclass in offensive play by netting four goals. He was ably supported by Amirreza Behbudi, who contributed a hat-trick (three goals), while Facundo Retamar Carnero scored twice and Raja Jalal Arslan added a single goal to the tally.
