It is needless to say how great a father you were and what a privilege it has been to be your son.

As an equestrian, for every one story I have to tell, those who watched you have four more to share. For over five decades, you dominated the sport in our racing silks of all white with a red Z.

But what I find thoroughly interesting is that my entire knowledge of the sport came from overhearing your phone calls or listening as you explained racing to someone else, never to me directly.

It is astonishing that even this residual knowledge has been enough for me to stand as a faint shadow of your greatness, and enough to carry on our racing colours.

My racing career is merely a tribute to your legacy, but I think we are doing a fair job at that.
