Let us take a quick inventory of the human condition on any given Tuesday. How often do we find ourselves in the sticky terrain where temperance is tapped out by appetite, confidence deflated by doubt, self-control seduced by alcohol, discipline caving in on the couch, and mental clarity enthusiastically clouded by dread?
โNot a few timesโ is the short answer.
We tend to believe that we are a very advanced species. We can calculate an orbital slingshot around the moon with the casual grace of a circus juggler. And yet, a breathtaking display of skills does absolutely nothing to prevent a person from driving cross-country in a state of total, emotional collapse. We have mastered the art of manufacturing reliable specialists, but we seem to have forgotten to check if anyone is tending to their souls. You can be a grand master chess player, a hall-of-fame researcher, or a neurosurgeon capable of re-wiring a brain, and still remain a rank amateur at the basic daily business of being a whole, rational person.
Technical excellence is a magnificent thing, to be sure. But on its own, itโs a terrible umbrella when the skies darken, and it starts pouring on the darker impulses of the heart. Even love, that beautiful cosmic glue that binds humans together, can turn into a homicidal force if it hasnโt spent some quality time getting educated. Note, getting trained in something is entirely different.
The problem with purely practical learning is that it is remarkably impractical the moment life stops being a neat technical problem and starts being a messy Greek tragedy. When a mentally incapacitating stress hits, a mastery of calculus will not toss a life jacket your way.
Perhaps instead of staring at the flowchart, a serious study of Stoic philosophy, our history, humanist poetry, and whatnot might save us. We should not rush to trade the Great Books too eagerly for the Great Manuals of Industrial Efficiency. We should not treat humans like computers that just need a better operating system. Otherwise, we should not act shocked when the bridge fails to hold, and the engineer breaks. We shouldnโt be surprised. If you train learners only to build structures, don't wonder why they break down when their own character is put under intense pressure.
Are we genuinely satisfied with raising a generation of high-functioning primates who possess very sophisticated tools but lack even the basic emotional maturity of a wise life navigator?
This brings us to the young children. Many parents today are stewing in a state of chronic, unceasing anxiety about their children's future, both near and distant. Teachers are understandably exhausted by the flippancy, the creative naughtiness, and the general teenage turbulence that heats up the classrooms. The common consensus is that teenagers are hardwired to make colossally stupid decisions.
Make no mistake, wrapping youth in a purely punitive, make-them-suffer logic is lazy. When we treat the young with clinical harshness, we donโt cure their folly. We actually invent new kinds of misery, and we make some specialists rich and, perhaps, unnecessarily needed. Itโs not that evil spirits inherently possess the young. Itโs that adults are often too tired to provide the patient care needed to comprehend why the youth are acting out in the first place.
Take note, most adults are proud survivors of their own tempestuous youth. So, the arrogance and mistakes of kids today are not a new phenomenon. The adults know it well. Many have been there, others go back there from time to time, and some are still there. Many wise people were once reckless kids, too. You can check the biographies of some presidents who were once ma*****na smokers. Todayโs young generation didn't invent the wheel of teenage stupidity. They are just taking it for a spin.
The wheel of youthful folly wonโt stop turning. Our job โ as wise adults, as competent teachers, as fellow survivors โ is to educate them on how to steer it, not just to curse the noise it makes, as if we were saints in bygone days. -end-
