ARE THE IFUGAO ALSO IGOROT?

The short answer is yes, the Ifugao are one of the Indigenous ethnolinguistic groups collectively known as the Igorot peoples of the Cordillera. However, the answer also comes with an important understanding of identity and respect.

The word Ifugao refers to a specific ethnolinguistic group native primarily to the province of Ifugao. They have their own languages, including Tuwali and Ayangan, as well as distinct traditions, rituals, music, clothing, and worldviews. The Ifugao are internationally recognized for their centuries-old rice terraces, sophisticated farming systems, and rich cultural heritage.

The term Igorot, on the other hand, is a broader collective name traditionally used to refer to the Indigenous Peoples of the Cordillera. It includes several ethnolinguistic groups, such as the Ifugao, Kankanaey, Ibaloi, Bontok, Kalinga, Isneg (Isnag), and Tingguian (Itneg), among others.

Historically, the word Igorot is widely understood to mean "people of the mountains" or "mountain dwellers." Since the Ifugao have lived in the mountainous Cordillera for centuries, they are part of this broader Indigenous family.

This means that every Ifugao may be considered Igorot in the broader cultural and anthropological sense, but not every Igorot is Ifugao. Just as every Filipino from Ifugao is Filipino, but not every Filipino is Ifugao, the same relationship applies to the terms Ifugao and Igorot.

Despite this, some Ifugao prefer to identify themselves simply as Ifugao rather than Igorot. This preference reflects their desire to emphasize their unique ethnolinguistic identity and cultural heritage. Others proudly identify as both Ifugao and Igorot, seeing the two identities as complementary rather than contradictory.

Neither perspective changes the historical and anthropological understanding that the Ifugao are among the Indigenous peoples of the Cordillera. Instead, it highlights the importance of respecting how individuals and communities choose to identify themselves.

Ultimately, the terms Ifugao and Igorot are not competing identities. One identifies a specific Indigenous people, while the other refers to a larger family of Indigenous peoples who share ancestral roots in the Cordillera. Understanding this distinction allows us to appreciate both the uniqueness of the Ifugao and the shared heritage that connects the Indigenous communities of the region.
