In a remarkable sighting, divers from Whispering Palms/Sipaway Divers, led by Lasse Gerres and Ronja Trübger, documented thresher sharks (genus Alopias) off Sipaway Island Marine Protected Area in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on October 25, 2025. The encounter, captured during a marine assessment supported by Pacific Environment and the local Coastal Resources Management Division, provides rare evidence of these elusive sharks thriving in Philippine waters. Thresher sharks are globally rare, highly sensitive to habitat disturbance, and protected under Philippine law (Republic Acts 9147 and 8550), making this sighting an important confirmation of the species’ continued presence and the effectiveness of local conservation measures.

The presence of thresher sharks within the MPA underscores the critical role of protected areas in preserving endangered species and maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. These apex predators help regulate fish populations, support coral reef health, and contribute to sustainable coastal livelihoods through ecotourism opportunities. This discovery serves as both a scientific milestone and a reminder of the importance of enforcing marine protection policies, promoting community stewardship, and expanding conservation efforts to safeguard the Philippines’ rich marine biodiversity for future generations.
