𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃 | 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝

The Philippines is one of the disaster prone countries in the world. Every year, Filipinos experience numerous typhoons all year, brace themselves for floods, landslides and the possibility of losing their homes. This disaster became so frequent that they treat it as a part of their life.

Yet what should not become normal is the cycle that happens after. When a storm hits, rescue teams are deployed, evacuation centers open, and relief goods are distributed. Donations pour in, government agencies begin clearing roads and restoring services, and promises of rehabilitation follow. Then, as the floodwaters disappear and public attention shifts elsewhere, many of the same issues are left unresolved. The next typhoon arrives, and the same communities suffer the same losses all over again.

The good news is that the Philippines has a plan. Through the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, the government adopted a more proactive approach to disaster management. Under the leadership of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the country promotes four key areas: prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation and recovery. The problem is not the lack of policies—it is making sure they are fully and consistently carried out in every community.

Preparedness should be more than yearly evacuation drills. It means investing in stronger roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and flood control systems that can withstand extreme weather. It also means improving hazard mapping, restoring forests and watersheds, enforcing land-use plans that keep families away from danger zones, and strengthening early warning systems that reach every barangay before disaster strikes.

Studies have shown that investing in disaster risk reduction saves both lives and money. Every peso spent on prevention helps reduce future damage to homes, infrastructure, businesses, and livelihoods. Instead of spending billions rebuilding after every storm, the country can save more by strengthening communities before disasters happen.

Disasters may be unavoidable, but their outcome is not. If we truly want safer communities and a more resilient nation, stop waiting for the next calamity to remind us what should have been done. The time to prepare is not after disaster strikes, it should be now.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 | 𝐍𝐅𝐇𝐒 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐬

North Fairview High School (NFHS) opened its doors on Monday, August 10, to serve as a temporary shelter for families affected by the flooding brought by the recent Habagat (Southwest Monsoon).

The school accommodated affected residents from nearby communities, with the evacuation site being coordinated with the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (BDRRMO) and the Quezon City Health Department (QCHD) to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of the evacuees.

As of Tuesday, August 11, the evacuation site recorded the following demographic data:
• Families: 161
• Individuals: 429
• Homeowners: 103
• Renters: 19
• Senior Citizens: 23
• Lactating Mothers: 2

As the situation continues, NFHS remains ready to provide a safe and secure space for those affected by the flooding, while concerned agencies continue to monitor and respond to the needs of the evacuees.
