Marine researchers have documented several newly recorded box jellyfish species in the Philippine waters, marking a significant advancement in national biodiversity research. The study, led by Sheldon Rey Boco and a multidisciplinary team, confirmed the presence of species such as Alatina alata, Carybdea cuboides, Malo species, and Morbakka virulenta, along with further records of Copula sivickisi and Malo filipina. Using underwater imaging, field observations, and validated citizen science data, researchers were able to detect these elusive species, which are often difficult to study due to their offshore and nocturnal behavior.

Beyond classification, the findings carry important ecological and public health implications. Box jellyfish play a key role as mid level predators in marine ecosystems, while some species possess highly potent venom that can pose risks to humans. Improved knowledge of their distribution supports both conservation planning and coastal safety measures. Published in the journal Thalassas, the research highlights how collaboration between scientists and citizen contributors can expand marine knowledge, especially in biodiversity hotspots like the Coral Triangle.
