WEEK 39 🐢🥋 Coach Jemps still recovering from the flu, so she sat this one out rather than contribute her germs to the curriculum; just paparazzi duty.

So Coach Marie led today’s five Lil’ Rollers. No problem since she’s raised four jiu-jiteiros 🤙🏼 of her own. Team Yasol became today’s junior coaching crew, helping wrangle the lil’ ones w Jack and Juno.

Josh and Matty were in, Zed was back, Carlos returned after a 2-mo hiatus, and we welcomed 4-yo Sandy, who had a grand time at his first class.

Week 38: learning cause and effect. 🥋 Matty practiced his shoot, then free-flowed with Coach Marie: getting swept, learning to pass, finding mount, feeling how a mount escape works and trying it himself. Then came guard retention (protect the vibranium! 😂) and My Ball. Less “do this,” more try, feel what happens, adjust, try again.

Lil’ Rollers 🐢 classes look chaotic and playful, but we’re being v deliberate underneath. 😉

The most important thing we teach in Lil’ Rollers isn’t technique but the joy of moving.

We don’t need mini athletes; we need kids who like moving. 🤸‍♂️

So yes, we teach jiu-jitsu 🥋 and offer glimpses of where these movements will eventually lead. But we’re in no hurry to turn every shrimp into a “hip escape,” every game into a drill, or every class into serious technical training. 😨

For now, much of the learning is disguised as play.

They crawl like animals, wrestle over tails, escape, chase, balance, fall down and get back up. They solve little physical problems, make mistakes, laugh, try something ridiculous, and sometimes discover that it actually works. 🤩🥳

There will be plenty of time for drilling, repetition, terminology and all the less glamorous work that comes with getting good at something. 🤓

Right now, we want 3-6yo children to hold on to their sense of wonder: to stay curious about what their bodies can do, enjoy figuring things out, and become comfortable falling, failing and trying again. 💪🏻

Most of all, we want them to associate jiu-jitsu with something they love doing. Before we ask them to love the sport, we let them love movement first. 🤸🏻‍♀️🥋

Week 38 🥋 Another stormy Saturday, another v small but determined crew. 🤙🏼 This week, Matty had the mats, Coach Marie and Coach Jemps pretty much to himself. 😅

One-on-one classes mean nowhere to hide, more turns, lots of reps, and plenty of room to play around with and refine what he already knows. And learn another magic power word: yet. 🙌🏼

It may be raining 🌧️ outside, but we’re still rolling inside. 🐢

Week 37. What happens when the drill starts becoming jiu-jitsu. 🥋

After warmups and animal movements, we practiced spontaneous breakfalls, because those don’t usually send invites. Then Buttscooter Takedown Tag prepared us for refining our single-leg takedowns.

We finished Back-to-Back: react, connect, then find mount, side control, or closed guard. Ended w a fun game of dodgeball before cool down. 🧘🏻‍♀️

We loved watching Josh and Matty go beyond today’s lesson. An arm drag appeared. Someone looked for the back. Past lessons started sneaking into their decisions without us prompting them.

They used to mostly follow the drill. Now they’re starting to play jiu-jitsu. 🤙🏼 And that’s the progress we’re looking for.

Little by Little 🐢🦀

This story was inspired by a real conversation during class. One of our Lil’ Rollers told me crab walks were hard. He was right. A few weeks later, he surprised himself. So did the rest of us.

The third installment in our Lil’ Rollers Animal Series is about something our little ones learn on the mats over and over: hard things don’t stay hard forever.

What feels impossible today can get a little easier with practice. Then a little easier again. Until one day, they realize they can do the thing they once couldn’t. 💪

Part of our effort to make the learning last beyond our weekly hour together.

📖 A new booklet is FREE every month for enrolled DEFTAC BF Lil’ Rollers. Extra copies and copies for non-enrollees are ₱50 each.

Little by little is how they grow. 🥋🐢

Week 37. Rainy-day Rollers. 🌧️🐢🥋

Josh and Matty braved the rain to train this week, which meant lots of reps and nowhere to hide. 😅

We worked from spontaneous breakfalls into Buttscooter Takedown Tag, then refined our single-leg takedowns 🤼‍♂️ before putting everything together with a Back-to-Back reaction game. 😃

These two soft-spoken cuties have come a long way from simply running around and following the rules of the drill. Now they actually engage, connect, problem-solve, and look for better positions. With sound effects 😂

Small class. Big progress. 🙌🏼🤙🏼

Week 36. 🐢🥋 Not every drill feels comfortable right away.

Someone opted out of Shrimp Tag Breakfall today. The takedown comes when you don’t quite know when to expect it, and that uncertainty was a little too much. Watch first. Try when you’re ready.

During hydration break, I admitted that I still shriek during takedowns sometimes. Years in this sport and I still can’t help it. 😖 🤪 The scream simply escapes my lips before dignity has a chance to intervene. 😅

Later, while watching the others escape a back take, he observed that it looked “rough.” So we talked about what was actually happening.

One partner was trying to stay connected. The other was trying to disconnect. Nobody was getting hurt. They were problem-solving together, each figuring out what to do when someone else had a different plan.

That’s a big part of jiu-jitsu. Learning to stay safe, think, and find your way out of uncomfortable situations, even if sometimes you need to watch first.

Or scream a little.
