Pride Month unfolded in ways, both joyful and heartbreaking, across different parts of the world. The LGBTQIA+ community continues to face discrimination, lack of recognition and respect, and even fatal violence fueled by extremist bigotry. Because these injustices remain a reality, we continue to push forward the fight for q***r rights in our country.

These lived experiences are well-documented in literature, exposing the sociopolitical and intrapersonal effects of state apparatuses that constantly marginalize q***r people. Writers have long since embedded LGBTQIA+ voices into their writings, and q***r literature continues to expand as more and more writers have begun to take up the pen to share their stories as an outright rejection of the notion that q***r identities and love are anything less valid.

In celebration of Pride Month, UP Mindanao’s Literary Society compiled a curated list of q***r literature from international and local writers, including from the BAE faculty and students—an emotive yet solemn coffee table repose to a month-long celebration. These literary works encompass different nuances of being q***r, portraying the joys and hardships that come with it.

This Independence Day, we reflect on the gap between the freedom we celebrate and the freedom we continue to fight for.

As imperialism, exploitation, and foreign intervention continue to shape the conditions of our nation, we are called to remain critical, vigilant, and committed to the pursuit of genuine national liberation. As Filipino writers, we bear the responsibility of amplifying the voices of the people, confronting injustice, and using our words in service of truth and resistance.

Today, we honor those who struggled before us by carrying their aspirations forward and continuing the fight for a truly free Philippines.

The UP Literary Society and BA English (Creative Writing) Alumna strongly condemns the Philippine National Police (PNP) Cateel for the baseless red-tagging and terrorizing of current and previous UP Mindanao Student Leaders and activists, one of which is Allaiza Gerodiaz, a UP Literary Society alumna, further pushing their anti-activism narrative. Redtagging causes ostracization, false charges, physical violence, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings, and hundreds of student activists across the country face these risks. As writers, and as Iskolar ng Bayan, we are a medium for the stories of the victims to the power of the state and we stand with the activists who show genuine care, and are truly in the service of the Filipino masses. As such, we must hold the PNP and NTF-ELCAC accountable for their brazen display of despotism against the people who are actively exposing the corruption of the state, attaching false accusations unto these figures as a baseless and futile attempt to repress and publicly crucify them.

We urge the public to be vigilant and careful of these campaigns meant to discredit our activists and local mass organizations.
