Cabonilas, Daa Help Gilas Boys Capture Stop 3 Crown in FIBA 3x3 Nations League

FEU standouts Cabs Cabonilas and Jedric Daa helped steer Gilas Pilipinas Boys to the Stop 3 championship of the 2026 FIBA 3×3 Nations League Asia 2 after defeating Japan, 19-14, in the finals on Wednesday at Hextar World Empire City in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

With the title, Gilas climbed into a share of first place in the conference standings with Belarus, as both teams now have 240 points. New Zealand sits in third with 230 points, while Japan is fourth with 220.

Cabonilas starred in the championship game with seven points as the trio of Cabonilas, Koji Buenaflor, and Earl Medina built a commanding 18-10 lead before sealing the victory. Buenaflor finished with six points, while Medina added five.

The Philippines dominated Stop 3, opening with a 21-16 win over New Zealand before routing Singapore, 22-14, in the pool stage. Cabonilas, who sat out Stop 2, erupted for 11 points against New Zealand and followed it up with 10 points versus Singapore.

Across the first three stops, Gilas also defeated Malaysia twice while absorbing narrow losses to Belarus and Japan before exacting revenge over the Japanese in the Stop 3 final.

The Gilas Boys will look to carry their momentum into the next leg, where they are grouped with New Zealand and Malaysia in the pool stage.

The unthinkable became reality as the FEU Tamaraws stunned the heavily favored UP Fighting Maroons, 85-76, in the 19th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup, proving that heart, grit, and belief can overcome even the most daunting odds.

Coming into the contest, the Fighting Maroons looked every bit like a dynasty in waiting. Fresh off their blasting DLSU last night and armed with one of the country's deepest and most talented rosters, UP appeared poised to continue its dominance in the preseason tournament.

But the Tamaraws had other plans.

Playing with a nothing-to-lose, everything-to-gain mentality, FEU's relentless ground-and-pound approach disrupted the Maroons from the opening tip until the final buzzer. Every loose ball was contested, every defensive possession was earned, and every run by UP was answered with unwavering resolve from the Green and Gold.

Leading the charge were Kerby Mongcopa, Mo Konateh, Janrey Pasaol, and JorickBautista, who fearlessly took the fight to their high-profile counterparts.
