In the video I am demonstrating the Aikido technique called Kaitenage, while my uke attacks with Shomenuchi, one of the traditional attacks practiced in Aikido. Although in real-life situations people rarely attack in this exact manner—unless they are also an Aikido practitioner—the movement represents the cutting action of a samurai sword strike. It can also be understood as an attack coming from someone holding a stick or weapon.
There are many things to understand in the world of Aikido, which is why regular training under experienced and knowledgeable instructors is very important. A teacher should not only understand traditional Aikido, but also have experience with real-life conflict and practical self-defense situations—situations where there are no rules, no referees, and no guarantees.
However, a true practitioner eventually moves beyond the desire to prove themselves through fighting. They become ready for the deeper challenge of Aikido: challenging and improving themselves from within. At this stage, the real opponent is no longer another person, but one’s own ego, attitude, discipline, and understanding.
Many practitioners never reach this level of understanding. Some may already hold Dan ranks or even higher grades, yet their mindset and movement may still reflect that of a beginner. In Aikido, rank alone does not define true growth. Continuous training, humility, and an open mind are what truly deepen one’s understanding of the art.
That is why we should always continue training, expanding our knowledge, and respecting both beginners and senior practitioners alike. Aikido is not about competition, pride, or showing superiority over others. It is about harmony, self-improvement, discipline, and lifelong learning. Always keep the mindset of a beginner, because when you remain humble, your learning never ends and your understanding of Aikido becomes much broader and deeper.
