SPORTS FEATURE | The true measure of a coach is never defined by the championships attained, nor by the number of times history is etched—because greatness is never engraved on trophies alone.
And time will eventually silence every whistle and close every chapter of a tournament. Yet, the woven tapestry of lessons that were planted will continue to flourish through every player who chooses courage over surrender, humility over pride, and purpose over personal glory.
This is how the late Eddie "Bange" Evangelista, former head coach of the Bulacan State University (BulSU) Gold Gears volleyball team, is remembered—not merely as a mentor who produced champions, but as a father who devoted his life to raising them. | via Jannes Magayon, PACESETTER

This study investigated sports anxiety, sports self-confidence, and perceived sports performance among 106 collegiate student-athletes during the competitive season. Using a quantitative correlational-mediation design, the research examined whether sports self-confidence serves as a psychological pathway linking anxiety with perceived athletic performance.
The findings revealed that sports anxiety significantly and negatively predicted sports self-confidence, while sports self-confidence significantly and positively predicted perceived sports performance. Although sports anxiety did not directly predict performance when confidence was considered, a significant indirect effect emerged, supporting a full mediation model in which anxiety influences perceived performance through its effect on athletes’ confidence. The study also identified significant s*x differences, with female student-athletes reporting higher cognitive anxiety, while male student-athletes reported higher sports self-confidence and perceived performance.
These findings highlight sports self-confidence as a critical psychological mechanism in competitive performance, reinforcing the value of confidence-building strategies such as mastery experiences, positive feedback, goal-setting, imagery, and pressure simulation in supporting student-athletes during competition.
This research contributes to global development efforts aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 4 (Quality Education), and 5 (Gender Equality).
Congratulations to Dr. Cruz on this noteworthy international scholarly achievement!
