Volcanic black sand can be a great habitat for macro critters because it creates a combination of food, shelter, and camouflage that many small marine animals prefer.

Volcanic coastal areas can accumulate organic particles from land and the surrounding ecosystem. These provide food for small organisms, which then support larger macro predators.

Places with volcanic black sand can be surprisingly productive for macro photography. Instead of looking only at the reef, divers often search the sand–rubble interface, small rocks, algae, and burrows
