Shorin-ryu Kyudokan is a traditional Okinawan karate school founded by Grand Master Yuchoku Higa (1910–1994). He established the famous Hombu Dojo in Naha, Okinawa, emphasizing explosive power, hip rotation, and the preservation of martial heritage. Today, the system is globally led by Soke Minoru Higa (10th Dan).

Origins and FoundationShorin-ryu
traces its roots back to Shuri-te—the ancient, close-quarters combat system developed in the royal capital of Okinawa.

The Founder: Yuchoku Higa, renowned as "The Strong Fist of Okinawa" for his legendary punching power (called Yuchoku no tijikun).

The Dojo: In 1947, Higa opened his first dojo. In 1954, he officially established the Kyudokan in the Tsuboya district of Naha, Okinawa.

The Meaning: Kyudokan translates to the "hall for the pursuit of the way," honoring the traditional philosophical values of martial arts.

Lineage and Evolution

Grand Master Higa trained directly under legendary masters of the Ryukyu islands, most notably Chōshin Chibana, who was a primary influence on his martial path.

Distinctive Traits: Kyudokan stands out from other Shorin-ryu styles through its highly specialized hip rotation techniques, maximizing striking force without compromising natural Okinawan movement.

Second Generation: After Higa Yuchoku’s passing in 1994, his nephew—Grand Master Minoru Higa (10th Dan)—succeeded him as the Soke (headmaster) of the system, a position he holds today.

International Expansion: In the mid-to-late 20th century, the system spread globally. Kyudokan is now firmly established in dozens of countries across Europe, South America, Asia, and North America, with global operations directed by international technical directors like Hanshi Oscar Higa
