A Torogan in General Tinio?

At first glance, Hacienda Severa may look like a mid-century modern house. Look a little closer, however, and you’ll notice architectural details that recall the Torogan, the traditional house of the Maranao people of Mindanao.

What is a Torogan, and why does a house in General Tinio have this kind of architectural influence?

We’re sharing this video as a starting point for understanding the traditional Torogan and its distinctive forms and ornamentation:

🎥 Watch the video below, then look again at Hacienda Severa.

Hacienda Severa was completed in the 1975 and designed by Architect Librado Macalinao. Its architecture reflects a period when Filipino design was drawing from different regional traditions and reinterpreting them in modern houses.

Can you spot the Torogan-inspired details?

History often unfolds in the same places, even when the stories are very different.

The Aquino-Diokno Memorial inside Fort Magsaysay preserves an important chapter of the Martial Law period.

Nearby in General Tinio, Hacienda Severa, completed in 1975, tells a different story of the same era through its architecture and local history.

If you are visiting the Aquino-Diokno Memorial, we hope you will also consider Hacienda Severa as part of understanding the fuller historical landscape of this side of Nueva Ecija.

Together, these places show how national history and local heritage can exist within the same landscape, each with its own story to tell.

Hacienda Severa welcomed representatives from Central Luzon State University (CLSU) on 18 July 2026 to explore opportunities for research collaboration and technology adoption.

The CLSU delegation, led by Dr. Aldrin E. Badua, University Extension Center Director, and Dr. Marvin M. Cinense, Director of the Center for Hybrid Rice Research, Innovation, and Mechanization, discussed the potential application of the Mobile Solar Pump Irrigation System to support the development of Hacienda Severa.

Ms. Lourdes Caballero shared Hacienda Severa's intention to develop an aromatherapy zone and the need for technology to support the irrigation requirements of the aromatic plants that will be cultivated. Mr. Gabriel Caballero and Mr. Pedro Caballero also shared the vision for the estate to become a learning destination while promoting sustainable and innovative farming practices.

The CLSU delegation then visited several areas of the estate to assess the suitability of the Mobile Solar Pump Irrigation System. They also expressed their openness to collaborating with Hacienda Severa through knowledge sharing, the promotion of CLSU technologies, and student internship opportunities.

Dr. Badua also invited the Caballero family to visit CLSU to explore other innovations developed by the university that align with the long-term goals of the estate. The visit highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and private initiatives in advancing agricultural innovation.

Hacienda Severa extends its sincere appreciation to the entire CLSU delegation—Dr. Aldrin E. Badua, Dr. Marvin M. Cinense, Mr. Jahson Mercado, Ms. Mary Rose B. Morales, Ms. Precious Joan P. Sibulburo, and Mr. Jayvanne H. Estigoy—for sharing their expertise and valuable insights.
