An Open Letter to Parents of Athletes

Be Their Biggest Fan, Not Their Biggest Barrier!

Our role as parents extends far beyond the sidelines. While coaches handle strategy and skill, we build the foundation of our children's mindset, resilience, and character. To help them thrive both in sports and in life, here is how we can truly show up for our young athletes:

• Fuel their ambition, don't restrict it.

Encourage your child to chase big goals and test their limits. Avoid projecting your own fears, limitations, or unfulfilled dreams onto them, let them discover how far their true potential can take them.

• Anchor them in reality with unwavering support.

To us, our kids will always be the star players on the field. However, there will always be someone faster, stronger, or more skilled. Teach them to view superior talent as inspiration rather than a threat, and encourage them to focus on beating their personal best rather than comparing themselves to others.

• Prioritize character over victory.

Never let athletic talent excuse poor sportsmanship, disrespect toward refs, or bad behavior on or off the court. Win or lose, emotional maturity and integrity will take them much farther in life than any trophy ever will.

•Protect the journey back from the game.

Whether you are walking home together, sitting on the bus, or taking public transit, don't turn the commute into an interrogation or a secondary coaching session. Let them process the game in peace. Ask if they had fun, praise their effort, and let them bring up mistakes on their own terms.

At the end of the day, coaches teach the game, but parents teach the growth. Be the safe harbor they can count on whether they hit the game-winning shot or make the game-costing mistake.
